- Creating Successful Corporate Training Events - Stock xchng ? svilen001
Successful corporate training events require giving employee tools, acknowledging prior learning, recognizing completion and taking care of participants.
For employees to value training and learn, they need to feel that their needs have been respected and their prior experience is recognized. In addition, if trainers provide a form of recognition of course completion and create a learning environment that is welcoming, employees will appreciate the acknowledgement.
Give Employees Tools to Apply on the Job with Ease
One of the principles of adult education stated by Malcom Knowles is to ensure that training is relevant and practical. Providing tools that employees can take back and apply on the job right away will motive learner engagement and training satisfaction. For example, templates, forms, activities, processes, or software can be given to participants within a training binder, online document library or CD.
Acknowledge Employee?s Prior Learning and Experience
Learners often come to training with prior learning and experience. Acknowledging that participants have wisdom, theoretical knowledge and examples to share with other participants will demonstrate respect. Encourage brainstorming and discussions asking participants to contribute ideas and share experiences. Instead of telling learners what they need to or should know in a lecture type presentation, assume that there will be participants that have prior knowledge of the topic and reinforce and acknowledge their contributions to a discussion.
Participants will also appreciate academic credit for prior learning from a prior learning assessment and recognition or PLAR process. Many colleges recognize years of experience and give learners advanced standing. Trainers that work with local colleges or universities can often have training recognized if it includes a well-documented evaluation process. Check with a local college or universities? continuing education, PLAR or extension department to see if the corporate training can be recognized.
Give Employees a Certificate
Employees like to have something for their portfolio that acknowledges that they have completed specialized training in a topic. Offer a certificate of completion that states the topics covered and the number of hours of training and any other special skill learned. To make the certificates official looking, print them on parchment (or certificate paper) and ask the instructor, Director or CEO to hand-sign the certificates.
Take Good Care of Employees
Successful training is not just about good content. Good training delivery is also reliant on creating a comfortable learning environment. Spend time considering the training venue and room set-up. Arrange tables and chairs so that the room feels spacious and air will flow. Ensure the lighting is adequate. Provide a good selection of food including vegetarian, low carbohydrate/sugar free and gluten free options if possible. Ensure the location is a balance between being in a good location for air travellers and local transit users.
Learners will appreciate trainers that consider their needs and not just the needs of senior management. Relevant, practical training that recognizes prior learning and offers learners benefits such as academic credit will cause rave reviews on evaluation forms.
