MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) ? A solar-powered plane that has wowed aviation fans in Europe is set to travel across the United States with stops in Phoenix, Dallas, Washington, D.C., and New York, organizers of the trip announced Thursday.
The plane, Solar Impulse, is expected to be ready to leave from NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif. on May 1, although the actual departure will depend on the weather, the plane's Swiss creators said at a news conference at the NASA center.
Solar Impulse, considered the world's most advanced solar-powered plane, will stop for seven to 10 days at major airports in each city, so the pilots can display and discuss the aircraft with reporters, students, engineers and aviation fans. It plans to reach New York's Kennedy Airport in early July ? without using a drop of fuel, its creators said.
Between Dallas and Washington, D.C., the plane will also stop at one of three other cities: Atlanta, Nashville or St. Louis, said Andr? Borschberg, Solar Impulse's co-founder, pilot and CEO. Each leg of the flight will run 20 to 25 hours.
"We want to inspire the young generation to become pioneers, to help them find and develop their passion," Borschberg said.
The Solar Impulse is powered by about 12,000 photovoltaic cells that cover massive wings and charge its batteries, allowing it to fly day and night without jet fuel. It has the wing span of a commercial airplane but the weight of the average family car, making it vulnerable to bad weather.
Its creators say the Solar Impulse is designed to showcase the potential of solar power and will never replace fuel-powered commercial flights. The delicate, single-seat plane cruises around 40 miles per hour and can't fly through clouds.
"The more you fly the more energy you have stored in the batteries, so it's absolutely fabulous to imagine all the possibilities the people can have with these technologies in their daily lives," said Bertrand Piccard, Solar Impulse co-founder and chairman.
In 2010, the solar plane flew non-stop for 26 hours to demonstrate that the aircraft could soak up enough sunlight to keep it airborne through the night. A year later, it went on its first international flight to Belgium and France.
Last year, the Solar Impulse made its first transcontinental voyage, traveling 1,550 miles from Madrid to the Moroccan capital Rabat in 20 hours.
Before its coast-to-coast American trip, the Solar Impulse will take test flights around the San Francisco Bay Area in April, officials said.
Piccard and Borschberg are planning an around-the-world flight in an improved version of the plane in 2015.
Piccard comes from a line of adventurers. His late father, Jacques, was an oceanographer and engineer who plunged deeper into the ocean than any other person. His grandfather Auguste, also an engineer, was the first man to take a balloon into the stratosphere.
Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones made history in 1999 when they became the first people to circle the globe in a hot air balloon, flying 25,000 miles nonstop for 20 days.

Mar. 26, 2013 ? University of Montreal researchers have discovered a novel molecular mechanism that can potentially slows the aging process and may prevent the progression of some cancers. In the March 23 online edition of the journal Aging Cell, scientists from the University of Montreal explain how they found that the antidiabetic drug metformin reduces the production of inflammatory cytokines that normally activate the immune system, but if overproduced can lead to pathological inflammation, a condition that both damages tissues in aging and favors tumor growth.
"Cells normally secrete these inflammatory cytokines when they need to mount an immune response to infection, but chronic production of these same cytokines can also cause cells to age. Such chronic inflammation can be induced, for example by smoking" and old cells are particular proficient at making and releasing cytokines says Dr. Gerardo Ferbeyre, senior author and a University of Montreal biochemistry professor. He adds that, "We were surprised by our finding that metformin could prevent the production of inflammatory cytokines by old cells."
In collaboration with Michael Pollack of the Segal Cancer Centre of the Jewish General Hospital, McGill University, Dr. Ferbeyre and his team discovered that metformin prevented the synthesis of cytokines directly at the level of the regulation of their genes. "The genes that code for cytokines are normal, but a protein that normally triggers their activation called NF-kB can't reach them in the cell nucleus in metformin treated cells," Dr. Ferbeyre explained. "We also found that metformin does not exert its effects through a pathway commonly thought to mediate its antidiabetic effects," he added. "We have suspected that metformin acts in different ways on different pathways to cause effects on aging and cancer. Our studies now point to one mechanism," noted lead authors of the study Olga Moiseeva and Xavier Desch?nes-Simard.
Dr. Ferbeyre emphasized that, "this is an important finding with implications for our understanding on how the normal organism defends itself from the threat of cancer and how a very common and safe drug may aid in treatment of some cancers and perhaps slow down the aging process. He adds, "It remains that determining the specific targets of metformin would give us an even better opportunity of profit from its beneficial effects. That's what we want to figure out next."

HONOLULU (Reuters) - When Japanese warplanes strafed the USS Honolulu in the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Navy sailor Ray Emory fired back with a machine gun, so the World War Two veteran knows all about being on the front line of America's defenses.
But North Korea's latest threats of a pre-emptive nuclear strike and rocket attacks on Hawaii do not faze him.
"They're not gonna do anything," Emory, 91, said at his Honolulu home. "They can't even control their missiles. North Korea doesn't bother me. It really doesn't," he added.
Emory's attitude seems to be the norm in the lush, tropical islands, where this week residents and tourists appeared to be pretty much ignoring Pyongyang's rhetoric.
If anybody was seriously preparing for the worst, Jared Aiwohi would know. He is the owner of a store called Uncle Jesse's Place in Wailuku, Maui, that specializes in camouflage clothing, martial arts gear, hunting and bow supplies - the kind of gear favored by survivalists who fear a Doomsday scenario.
"The lifestyle here is laid back and people don't tend to be concerned about these things," Aiwohi said. "We always have the regulars prepping for things like this, but they haven't come in."
The U.S. military announced on March 15 it was bolstering missile defenses in response to the threats from North Korea, which has specifically mentioned Hawaii and the Pacific Island territory of Guam as potential targets.
"Yes, I'm concerned, but what can I do?" said Hawaiian homemaker Cheryl Yamamoto, 57. "Nothing."
Few believe North Korea will risk starting a full-out war - and Yamamoto said the ritual of going to work, getting dinner and taking care of her family weighed more on her mind than what the North Koreans might or might not do.
"I can't let them run my life," she said.
Joey Augustine and Doug Tojeiro, visiting from the continental United States, took time out from enjoying the local wild life (sea turtles) to discuss the threats as they walked up a rocky path from the beach. Both were skeptical.
"I think they're just trying to intimidate us, to see if they can get a rise out of us," Tojeiro said, as he wiped the salt water from his face. "We have the greatest military in the world to stay at peace."
On Guam, which lies about 2,500 miles closer to Pyongyang than Honolulu, the island's flow of tourists has been unaffected by rhetoric from North Korea, residents said.
While still on peoples' minds, concerns over the tension have receded somewhat as residents of the predominantly Catholic island have turned their attention to Easter celebrations.
Tammy Cruz, 38, a teacher from the village of Santa Rita, admitted she'd been a little worried: "Of course it's a scare to hear that our island is threatened." But she was focused on more immediate things: "Our tradition is to get together as a family and to come together to eat as well as have the kids play and to do an Easter Egg hunt."
While U.S. Stealth bombers and a B-52 bomber flew practice runs over South Korea this week, Honolulu's Department of Emergency Management said it had not received any particular alert about potential threats.
"In the event of a rocket attack, then the national defense system would render it useless," said Mel Kaku, director of the Department of Emergency Management. "The best recommendation to our people would be to shelter in place until the threat was eliminated," he added.
In the event of any attack, Kaku's advice to residents is "stay away from windows, or open areas, stay indoors."
"Kind of like during a hurricane, the blast would be similar, with high winds and projectiles," he said.
The Pentagon has declined to define the range of North Korea's rockets, saying it is classified. But Admiral James Winnefeld, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged on March 15 that one type of North Korean missile likely had the range to reach the United States.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Florida Gulf Coast became the first 15 to reach the Sweet 16, and the Eagles not only made it look easy, they made it look fun.
Little-known FGCU beat San Diego State 81-71 on Sunday night, its second NCAA tournament upset of the weekend. Just like in their opening win over second-seeded Georgetown ? the Eagles' calling card to the nation ? there were plenty of laughs, dunks and dances.
"We don't take ourselves too seriously," said Florida Gulf Coast coach Andy Enfield, whose players tossed him in the air and doused him with water in a raucous celebration before his postgame interviews. "We try to have fun, get serious when we have to.
"Our goal was to make history and we did it."
With its campus in Fort Myers, Florida Gulf Coast opened its doors to students in 1997. The university only became eligible for postseason play last year. Now the next opponent for the upstart state school will be the system's flagship university, third-seeded Florida, on Friday night in the South Regional semifinal in Dallas.
"We tried to scrimmage them early in the season in the preseason," Enfield said. "Now we get our shot."
Bernard Thompson had 23 points and Sherwood Brown added 17 for FGCU, the Atlantic Sun champion.
In their first-ever NCAA tournament game on Friday, the 15th-seeded Eagles busted brackets everywhere with a win over Georgetown, a game in which they took control with a 21-2 run in the second half.
It went much the same way against seventh-seeded San Diego State.
This time the run was 17-0 and Brown, who was saddled early in the second half with foul trouble, had eight of the first 10 points of it. When it was over the Eagles led 71-52 with 4:19 to play and the only decisions left were how the players and fans were going to celebrate.
Brown stuck out his tongue after every big basket, often in the direction of the hundreds of Eagles fans jammed into one section.
Even when the game was tight, he and his teammates looked they were glad to be on the court. The Eagles waved their arms and played along with a lively crowd that came to see an upset. There were big smiles and high-fives.
In short, they showed a kind of joy that's often missing from high stakes, high drama games in March.
"We're all about having fun and also playing really hard and that's something we like to do, we like to get the crowd involved," said Brown, the A-Sun's player of the year. "The whole crowd got behind us even if they are not from Fort Myers, or as I like to say, 'Dunk City.'"
It turns out a rap video called "Dunk City" sprang up overnight in praise of the Eagles.
The notoriously tough Philly fans jumped on the bandwagon, too. One seated behind the FGCU bench held a sign ? "Fly, Eagles, Fly!" ? the motto of the NFL team that plays across the street from the Wells Fargo Center.
And after it was all over, the whole team joined in a bird dance that the players on the bench had been doing during the game.
"I know I can say for all the players, this was the biggest game for us. None of us have played on this stage," point guard Brett Comer said. "We are blessed to be here."
FGCU played like it had nothing to lose. And really, the Eagles didn't. Given their school's short history, nobody expected them to win a game at the NCAA tournament, let alone two.
"They play with a swagger, and they have a right to do that," said San Diego State coach Steve Fisher, who knows about players with attitude, having led the Fab Five to consecutive national championship games at Michigan. "You can have that look and feel, but you have to compete and play to earn your spurs, and they've done that."
Comer, who didn't have as many lob passes for dunks as he did against the Hoyas, finished with 10 points and 14 assists, some of which resulted in dunks that had the crowd cheering and wanting more.
"We want to get out and run," Comer said. "We're just having so much fun."
FGCU even unleashed another offensive weapon. Christophe Varidel, a native of Switzerland, hit two big 3s early for the Eagles and finished with 11 points after going scoreless against Georgetown.
"If we can get him open shots, he's as good a shooter as I've seen," Enfield said. "He stepped up tonight and helped us and we needed that because Sherwood Brown was in early foul trouble."
Jamal Franklin had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the seventh-seeded Aztecs (23-11), who were trying to reach the regional semifinals for the second time in three years.
Franklin spoke with Brown after the game.
"I just told him just keep being the leader that he is, make sure the ball is in his hands, make sure he does what he has to do to keep his team rolling," Franklin said.
Xavier Thames' layup brought the Aztecs within 54-52 with 11:33 to play but the Eagles were off on their spurt about 90 seconds later. FGCU held San Diego State without a field goal for more than 7 minutes as it again pulled away again from a team with much bigger national profile.
"We just tried to keep a steady pace and tried to wear them down. We think we can play with anybody in the country," center Chase Fieler said. "When we got the running game going it felt like a home game."
The Eagles shot 55.9 percent for the game (33 of 59), including going 7 of 18 from 3-point range.
The Aztecs finished at 44.3 percent (27 of 61) and were 8 of 23 from beyond the arc.
"They ran. They ran hard, they ran consistent, and they ran effectively," Fisher said. "They're playing with a kind of momentum that they have earned."
FGCU had one of its highlight plays in the first half when Comer flipped the ball up toward the rim and a flying Eric McKnight grabbed it for a one-hand jam with 8:50 to play that woke up the crowd.
Suddenly it sounded a lot like Friday night, when the Eagles had several jams on lob passes that were a big part of the Georgetown upset.
McKnight was asked if that was his best dunk.
"I don't rate them," he said, "but it was one of my best ones."

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Police detained 20 men Sunday in central India's Madhya Pradesh state after a Swiss woman on a cycling trip was gang-raped.
No arrests have been made so far but police were questioning the men in connection with the rape and assault on the woman and her husband in Datia district of the state, said senior police officer D.K. Arya.
He said the couple told police the woman had been raped by seven or eight men, but that it was dark and they could not be sure of the exact number. As a first step, police have registered a case of rape against seven unidentified men and were searching nearby villages, he said.
The attack comes three months after the fatal gang-rape of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus outraged Indians and spurred the government to pass laws to protect women.
The couple were on a three-month vacation in India. They had visited the temple town of Orchha and were planning to cycle to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, the monument to love, nearly 210 kilometers (130 miles) away.
They set out from Orchha on Friday and had pitched their tent in a forest near Jatia village when they were attacked by a group of men armed with wooden sticks.
The men beat up the husband, tied him to a tree and then raped the woman, police said.
The Swiss ambassador in India, Linus von Castelmur, has spoken to the couple and has demanded a swift probe of the incident.
Castelmur said he was "most distressed" by the incident and had assured the couple of all help and support.
"Their health and treatment is the priority of the moment," the embassy said in a statement.
The embassy said it was in touch with local authorities in Madhya Pradesh and has urged a "swift investigation and for justice to be done."

That was fast. It was just a month ago that Mailbox launched its unique (if queue-ridden) email client for iPhone users, and today we're hearing that it's been acquired by Dropbox. While the two aren't explicit about their plans, the Mailbox crew makes clear that a Dropbox union will help scale its client, including to non-Gmail providers and more devices. The team also isn't shy about speculating about what could happen if Dropbox's cloud storage was "connected" to Mailbox. We'll just have to give the new partners some time to produce what could be an alluring software hybrid.
Update: "Sources" are suggesting the asking price was around $100 million. Which... we'll present without comment.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Investor optimism about the economy pushed Asian stock markets higher Friday after Wall Street logged more gains and the U.S. job market showed further signs of strengthening.
Fewer Americans sought unemployment aid last week, reducing the average number of weekly applications last month to a five-year low. The Labor Department said Thursday that applications fell by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 332,000. That reduced the four-week average to the lowest level since the week of March 8, 2008, three months after the Great Recession began.
The drop helped propel the Dow Jones industrial average to its tenth straight sessions of gains. That hasn't happened since 1996.
Mitul Kotecha of Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said U.S. industrial production figures and other data to be released later Friday are expected to show additional signs of recovery in the world's No. 1 economy. Hope for the U.S. economy offsets worries about Europe's recession and debt woes and a brewing budget battle in Washington over automatic spending cuts, also known as sequestration in government circles.
"The trend of improving U.S. data is continuing. It's impressive it is taking place despite the drag of the sequestration and the worries about the eurozone. It shows the market is overlooking some of these concerns and looking at growth," said Mitul Kotecha of Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.
Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.1 percent to 12,512.23 after both houses of parliament endorsed Haruhiko Kurodo, the current president of the Asia Development Bank, to head the Bank of Japan. The vote allows Kuroda to stand in for current Bank of Japan Gov. Masaaki Shirakawa after he steps down on March 19. Another vote is required to make Kuroda's appointment permanent.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.6 percent to 22,761.33. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 1.6 percent to 5,089.40. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan, mainland China and Indonesia also rose. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.7 percent to 1,989.26. Benchmarks in the Philippines and Malaysia also fell.
The Dow rose 0.6 percent to close at 14,539.14. The S&P 500 index gained 0.6 percent to 1,563.23. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.4 percent to 3,258.93. In addition to positive jobs data, record corporate profits and reassurances from Federal Reserve officials that they plan to keep interests rates at historically low levels have also helped push stocks higher.
Among individual stocks, Petrochina Ltd., China's biggest oil and gas producer, was flat after Italian oil producer ENI said it sold a 20 percent stake in a gas field in Mozambique to the Hong Kong-listed company for $4.2 billion.
Benchmark oil for April delivery was up 26 cents to $93.29 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 51 cents to close at $93.03 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.
In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3023 from $1.3000 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 96.11 yen from 96.02 yen.

The idea behind the plot is in our world there is another that coexist, but is hidden from the eyes of all those unaware to magic. It is here the rustle of an appending war begins.
There was once a time magical creature where known to all, and they and mortals lived together in peace...but soon hatred bred as differences became a meaning of worth. Magical beings drifted away from mortal life, and soon became stories told to children....but it didn't end there.
After time, any being with mortal blood or association was soon seen as less than worthy and too was forced into a lower class.
Dark times approached and with it brought the blood of many....
Faries, nymphs, elves, angels, demons, witches, and wizards are all creatures of fantasy....at least it is what they were born to believe
Muggles, or anyone with a tie to them, are worthless and serve no purpose to the world....at least it is what they were born to believe
Under the cloak of the nights they were taken from their families and hidden were they would least be sought out: under the noses of those seeking to end their lives.
Souls destined to work together would first have to grow into worlds hell bent on ending the other...the question was: Would they be able to turn their back on the people they grew to love and trust a those they were taught to hate?
Muggle:
Born with no magic ability or blood.
Witch/ Wizard:
Have magic ancestors in their family bloodline. Able to use spells, potions, teleport, and fly. (Pretty much the same the as the one sin the book). They gain their powers at birth, but will not reach full magical maturity until thirteen.
Star:
Silver hair and sapphire eyes mark the appearance of a star. They have large wings which vary in color and skin hard as diamond. They live forever in their prime, and have the ability to manipulate objects, elements, and sound.
Daemon:
Daemon takes on the appearance of an animal most fitting to his (or is rare cases her)personality. A shape shiftier, a daemon can go from his human form to beast with no effort.Immortal, a Daemon will live out his days forever in his prime( there are cases of some aging as late as sixty). Along with their fierceness in battle and a rapid ability to heal, a daemon has the ability to heal others by transferring the wound onto himself as well as manipulate emotions.
Veela: Magical ability of Star, but the fierceness of a Daemon. With a keen sense of smell, taste, sight, and hearing they are a force all of their own. They have the ability to change between two states: Human-like or beast (when angered). A veela will not "awaken" until their eighteenth birthday, and powers along with veela transformation varies; some have sharp claw and wings , while others change all together. This varies on bloodline
Pure blood:
No Muggle blood, Muggle borns, or half-bloods at all in their genealogical pedigree. This also means no cross bloodlines with exception of the bith of a Veela (rare to happen) DaemonxStar= Veela
Squibs:
Born of pure blood magical parents, but who develops no magical abilities.
Halfling:
Magical bloodline, but not of the same race (with the exception of DaemonxStar which is considered to remain pure) Abilities vary based of parentage.
Blood traitor:
Those who have magic and Muggle ancestors in their bloodline. Abilities vary based of parentage.
Mud blood:
Those who come from non-magical families (believed to be decedents of Squibs that bore children with muggles and the magical gene resurfaced after many generations unexpectedly). Looked down upon, but are currently preferred over muggles.
The "squib"
Born a muggle, was sent to live with a pure blood family that allies themselves with the war. Raised to despise all muggles, mud bloods, and blood traitors.
The pure blood
Remained with family that allies themselves with the war (Sibling to the "squib")
The mud blood
Remained with family, but were moved where they are hidden and away from threat. Is the only one whose bloodline is known.
The blood traitor
Sent to live with a pure blood family that is neutral
The blood traitor
Sent to live with a pure blood family that is apart of the rebellion

Tomorrow Samsung will announce the Galaxy S4 -- I know this because I'll be in New York, playing Jimmy Olsen to Phil Nickinson's Clark Kent and otherwise helping out with Android Central's coverage -- and as if on cue, Apple's senior vice president of marketing, Phil Schiller, has popped up to send some jabs Android's way. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal's Ian Sherr and Jessica E. Lessin, Schiller hit the usual targets of fragmentation, lack of integration, and poor user experience:
Android is often given a free replacement for a feature phone and the experience isn't as good as an iPhone. [...] When you take an Android device out of the box, you have to sign up to nine accounts with different vendors to get the experience iOS comes with. They don't work seamlessly together.
Schiller did add that, according to Apple's own research, four times as many people switched from Android to iPhone during Q4 quarter as the other way around. Again, that's Apple's research, so weigh it accordingly.
Other than that, it's pretty much what Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, has said numerous times before during quarterly conference calls, and Steve Jobs before him. In other words, nothing new. Not even the timing.
Everyone likes to hijack their competition's news cycles. It's part of the C-level job description. And everyone gets made fun of for doing it. Likewise part of the job description.
So amen or make that fun if you like. Personally, I'd rather let the phones and tablets both companies field this year do the talking for them.

He published more than 30 books, inventing and popularizing terms such as ?Spaceship Earth?, ephemeralization, and synergetic. He developed numerous inventions, mainly architectural designs, including widely known geodesic dome. Carbon molecules known as fullerenes were later named by scientists for their resemblance to geodesic spheres. He was the second president of Mensa from 1974-1983.
He was born Richard Buckminster Fuller on July 12, 1895 in Milton, Massachusetts to Richard Buckminster Fuller and Caroline Wolcott Andrews.?Like his father and ancestors before him, Bucky attended Harvard University. Although unlike them, he was expelled from Harvard twice ? first for spending all his money partying with a vaudeville troupe, and then, after having been readmitted, for his ?irresponsibility and lack of interest.? By his own appraisal, he was a non-conforming misfit in the fraternity environment.?Fuller was living in low-income public housing in Chicago, Illinois when he was 32.Drawing from Fuller's Patent - Laminar Geodesic Dome
While he was serving as the Summer Institute director in 1949 at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, he began reinventing a project that would make him famous which was the geodesic dome. Although the geodesic dome had been created about 30 years earlier by Dr. Walther Bauersfield, Fuller was awarded United States patents. He is credited for popularizing this type of structure.??In 1949, he erected his first geodesic dome building that could sustain its own weight with no practical limits.?To prove his design, and to awe non-believers, Fuller suspended from the structure?s framework several students who had helped him build it. The U.S. government recognized the importance of his work, and employed his firm Geodesics, Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina to make small domes for the Marines.
Fuller believed human societies would soon rely mainly on renewable sources of energy, such as solar- and wind-derived electricity. He hoped for an age of ?omni-successful education and sustenance of all humanity.? He referred to himself as ?the property of universe? and during one radio interview he gave later in life, declared himself and his work ?the property of all humanity?. For his lifetime of work, the American Humanist Association?named him the 1969 Humanist of the Year. He was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom on February 23, 1983 by President Ronald Reagan. Bucky?s great grandfather was Timothy Fuller. Fuller served as member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, as a State councilor and served in the Massachusetts State Senate from 1813 to 1816. He was distinguished as an orator, making effective speeches in behalf of the Seminole Indians, and against the Missouri compromise. Fuller was an ardent supporter of John Quincy Adams, and published a pamphlet entitled ?The Election for the Presidency Considered.? Arthur Buckminster Fuller, Bucky?s grandfather, was a Unitarian clergyman of the United States. He attempted to give the Unitarian Church appeal to all social classes and championed the important liberal reforms of the day. He became a?United States Army chaplain during the American Civil War accompanying soldiers into battle and lost his life to a cause in which he firmly believed.Margaret Fuller
He was the grandnephew of American journalist and women?s rights advocate, Margaret Fuller. She was the first full-time American female book reviewer in journalism and her book Woman in the Nineteenth Century?is considered the first major feminist work in the United States. She became the first woman allowed to use the library at Harvard College and she was the first female correspondent for the New York Tribune.?Her father Timothy Fuller, offered her an education as rigorous as any boy?s at the time and forbade her from reading the typical feminine fare of the time, such as etiquette books and sentimental novels. Margaret later blamed her father?s exacting love and his valuation of accuracy and precision for her childhood nightmares and sleepwalking.
Bucky Fuller famously wore three watches; one for the current zone, one for the zone he had departed, and one for the zone he was going to.

Cooking three meals a day every day can become monotonous, especially if you?re juggling kids and work. It?s easy to get in a rut where you?re making the same meals over and over again. If you?re looking for some fresh inspiration but need meals to be quick and simple, check out Martha?s Everyday Food. A branch of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Everyday Food is famous for pairing the aesthetic of Martha Stewart Living with practical recipes any home cook can execute, no matter how busy life is.
Keep reading to learn more about a recipe app that?s guaranteed to shake up your cooking routine.
Like the article? You should subscribe and follow us on twitter.
Open the app and the you immediately recognize the familiar style of Martha Stewart Omnimedia?s Everyday Food brand: bright and cheerful colors paired with photos of fresh and simple meals. The home screen is a slide show featuring daily articles by Everyday Food editors. Topics include Healthy Eating, In Season, Cravings, On the Side, Sweet Spot and Weekend Chef. Tap a photo to view every article on the topic for the past week.
True to the Everyday Food brand, this app is colorful and packed with simple yet beautiful food photos. The home screen, right, is a slide show of current articles from Everyday Food Editors.
One strange thing about the functionality that may throw you off is when you select Dinner Tonight from the slideshow it takes you to the most recent recipe in the archive, not necessarily the recipe in the photograph. For example, Chile-Garlic Chicken is pictured above, but selecting it reveals a recipe for Artichokes in Oil. Tap on the days of the calendar below and you?ll find the Chile-Garlic Chicken recipe on Wednesday the 20th. It would be easier for users to understand if the browsing screen updated tiles to reflect current content.
Select a topic from the slide show (like Dinner Tonight) and you find an archive for the last week of recipes, left. Tap a photo to view the entire recipe, right.
On the positive side, it?s nice to see Everyday Food offering users more recipes to browse, and the weekly archive is always updating with fresh content. Another handy feature is the clock in the top right corner of the recipe. It lets you know how much time is needed to cook the recipe so you can quickly browse through the list. This is especially handy if you want to avoid takeout tonight but only have 15 minutes to cook. Tap the photo to see the full recipe description and instructions.
The Everyday Food app has much more to explore. If you?re looking for a recipe featuring a specific ingredient, tap the Recipe Finder at the bottom of the home screen. Here you can search more than four thousand Everyday Food recipes (more added each month). This sophisticated search tool allows you to set filters in four categories: Main Ingredient, Dish, Course and Time.
Open the Recipe Finder to search all 4,143 recipes using filters, left. My search for a 30 minute chicken salad to have a t lunch showed 16 recipe matches, to the right.
The search filters are very helpful and would be even better if you could search by holiday or special occasion, like Super Bowl recipes or Easter. Otherwise, this tool functions really well, quickly displaying accurate results for a good user experience.
Everyday Food magazine is known not just for quick and easy recipes, but also for helping home cooks prepare a multi-course meal for weeknight suppers that feels a little more special than one-pot cooking. Recipe Shuffle brings that concept to life using the unique capabilities of the mobile interface. The screen is divided into four regions, representing the Main Course, Side Dish, Dessert and Drink components of a single meal. Shake your iPhone and watch as a randomly selected combination of recipes appears on the screen.
Recipe Shuffle is a fun tool to inspire users with unexpected recipe combinations, left. Tap on the box to see the full recipe and Add To Favorites for easy access later.
This feature is fun and great for inspiring new flavor combinations when you?re in a cooking rut. It?s not always practical, though (like when you end up with tortellini pasta for the main course and orzo pasta for the side dish). Tap the photo to see each recipe and select Add To Favorites so you won?t forget where to find it.
Recipes in the Everyday Food app are easy to read when you?re in the kitchen cooking away. The recipe title is followed by essential information like how long the dish takes to prepare and how many people it serves. Ingredient lists include short instructions for prep work to make the actual cooking more efficient. Directions give every step of the process with plenty of supportive information to help home cooks understand the desired result and signs of being on the right track. Each recipe includes helpful Nutritional Information like calories, carbs, fat and protein breakdown. The only downside is a mildly distracting ever-present ad for an Everyday Food magazine subscription, even though they?ve stopped publishing it and instead incorporated Everyday Food into Martha Stewart Living magazine.
Recipes are clear and easy to read while you?re in the kitchen cooking, left. You can save notes to recipes, add a recipe to your favorites, create shopping lists or send a link of the recipe to a friend, right.
Additional functionality can be found at the bottom of each recipe. Tap Add To Favorites to save the recipe for later reference. Add To Shopping List saves the recipe ingredients in a handy form that allows you to check a box when you?ve purchased the ingredient. Your Favorites and Shopping Lists can be accessed only by selecting the button in the top right corner of the screen and scrolling through a list of options. It would be nice to see a quick access feature button instead. The Everyday Food app does a great job of making valuable information easy to share by text, email or twitter. Some recipe apps only let you share a promotional message like, ?Here?s what I?m cooking now!? Everyday Food inserts a link to the actual recipe, which is the whole point of sharing. Lastly, the Watch and Learn tab is a collection of short instructional videos from the Everyday Food team. If you need a primer on basic techniques like Sharpening Knives or How to Shell Shrimp, the videos are an excellent resource.
Martha?s Everyday Food provides an excellent answer to the age-old question: What?s for diner tonight? The creators have done a great job of displaying a lot of content (thousands of recipes) without overwhelming users. The app is beautifully designed with fun features that make use of the mobile phone platform. In the past year, users have reported a lot of frustration with crashing issues, and it seems that the developers listened and tried to rectify these problems with the last major upgrade in February. I didn?t experience any problems with crashing during my testing. Overall, it?s a great app with plenty recipes for less than a dollar.

New research from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) reveals that B cells regulate obesity-associated inflammation and type 2 diabetes through two specific mechanisms. The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences, indicates the importance of continuing to explore B cells as a therapeutic target to treat these diseases. Barbara Nikolajczyk, PhD, associate professor of microbiology at BUSM, is the study's senior author.
The incidence of diabetes continues to rise at alarming rates. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the disease now affects approximately 25.8 million Americans. In 2007, the National Institutes of Health estimated that the direct and indirect costs of diabetes were a staggering $174 billion.
Type 2 diabetes, which is a common result of obesity, occurs when the body produces insulin but cannot use it properly (insulin resistance) or the body does not produce enough insulin. The body needs insulin to absorb glucose and generate energy. If the body does not produce and respond to insulin appropriately, it can, over time, lead to various complications such as cardiovascular disease, nerve damage, kidney disease and blindness.
Previous research has shown that B cells, which are white blood cells of the immune system, promote inflammation and can lead to the development of type 2 diabetes, but the mechanisms underlying B cell function were unclear.
The results of this study shed light on that question and indicate that B cells secrete a pro-inflammatory ratio of proteins called cytokines, which directly promote the insulin resistance that characterizes type 2 diabetes. The researchers also demonstrated that B cells directly regulate inflammatory T cells, an immune cell type known to cause insulin resistance in animal models of disease.
"Now that we have identified the specific mechanisms by which B cells promote inflammation, we can help develop novel, targeted approaches to treat type 2 diabetes," said Nikolajczyk. "Our study supports the continued exploration of FDA-approved B cell depletion drugs, which are known to be generally safe and effective, as novel agents to prevent obesity-associated inflammation and type 2 diabetes."

TiVo fans who want to be able to watch whatever they want, in any room that they want can finally stop waiting. Sure, some have been satisfied with TiVo's Multi-Room Viewing even though it required multiple DVRs with the multiple Now Playing lists and multiple ToDo lists that go with them. But for those TiVo fans who want a single whole-home DVR, the TiVo Mini is available to order for $99.99 plus a $6-per-month subscription, or $249 for the device with lifetime service. This is less than the cost of another TiVo, but more than most set-top boxes available at retail. Of course the Mini can do what most less expensive retail boxes cannot; take the place of a DVR and deliver the most popular programming source in America, premium cable TV. Exactly how well it extends the TiVo experience to another room is what you'll find out if you click through.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel responds to Afghan President Hamid Karzai's statements in which Karzai accused the U.S. and Taliban with working together.
?
By Mike Taibbi, Correspondent, NBC News
KABUL ??In his opening statement released at the start of his first Afghanistan visit since being named defense secretary, Chuck Hagel reminded everyone, "We are still in a war." By the time his official visit ended, after a planned joint press conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai was cancelled over "security concerns," it was clear that war?s second front, the war of words, was as volatile as ever.
The press conference cancellation was announced hours after Karzai had gone on national television with another blast of criticism over the U.S. role here. He said the U.S. and the Taliban were "negotiating daily," and working in concert to ensure that coalition combat forces would remain in Afghanistan beyond the scheduled pullout in 2014. Karzai added that two deadly suicide attacks Saturday ? one explosion in Kabul that Hagel actually heard from his safe location more than a mile away ? were intended by the Taliban to show that U.S. and coalition forces would not be able to withdraw as planned.
"Categorically false," said the commander of coalition forces, U.S. General Joseph Dunford. A Taliban spokesman also rejected all of Karzai?s assertions unequivocally.
By Sunday night, Dunford was compelled to say the U.S. "does not have a broken relationship (with Karzai)," or a lack of trust. And Hagel told reporters that as a former politician himself he "can understand the kind of pressures national leaders are always under," and that the two countries will be able to move forward together.
Still, the?dust-up?over the busted joint press conference was evidence of the stubborn distance yet to be covered ? and that seems in some ways to be widening ? between an emerging new Afghanistan and the U.S., its chief protector and stakeholder.
Spokesman Jay Carney reacts to comments made by Afghan President Hamid Karzai in which he accused the U.S. and Taliban with working together.
One illustration of that distance ? the cancellation on Saturday, even as Hagel began his round of briefings, of the planned handover to Afghan control of the Parwan prison at Bagram Air Base. To the Karzai government the ceremony would be welcome evidence of his administration?s authority and autonomy. ?But the ceremony was spiked and delayed at least temporarily when it was learned the U.S. would insist that detainees it considered high risk or high value would not be included in the prisoner releases Karzai has said are essential if reconciliation with the Taliban is to go forward.
The Pentagon has canceled a scheduled joint press conference with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai citing security concerns. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.
Another example of the stubborn distance between the Karzai government and its primary benefactor ? Karzai?s order that U.S. and coalition special forces withdraw from the Kabul suburb of Wardak because of unconfirmed allegations of attacks and abusive tactics employed against civilians. Karzai had announced a two-week deadline for compliance with his order; it?s now two weeks later, with no evidence those special forces have retreated as ordered.
And Karzai?s new allegation Sunday that the U.S. and the Taliban are "negotiating daily" ? in Doha, Qatar, where the Taliban have set up an office, and elsewhere ? was denied by both parties but was a signal too that the Afghan leader feels the endgame might be played out in forums and in discussions in which he won?t be the controlling voice.
Despite unequivocal denials by both the U.S. and a Taliban spokesman that any negotiations are taking place, Karzai did not back off his remarks when he met privately with Hagel after their press conference was called off and replaced by a mere photo op.
"I told him it was not true ... that the U.S. unilaterally is not working with the Taliban to negotiate anything,"?Hagel later told reporters.
What would Karzai?s goal be in asserting the existence of a?back-channel?alliance between the U.S. and the Taliban?
"Political," a NATO official said, asking not to be identified. "I mean Karzai has always been a bit paranoid, and he?s got a control reflex that seems more apparent now, as he?s speaking to Afghans and to his legacy ? but these comments about the U.S. and the Taliban might end up killing all possibilities for real negotiations. It?s difficult to see where (Karzai) is going."
But though the Karzai/Hagel press conference was scrapped, the two sides did issue final statements of continued solidarity.
"We talked about everything (in our private meeting)," Hagel said, "I told him that he could and should call me directly if there?s anything I can do to facilitate the resolution of any of these issues."
Karzai?s chief spokesman, Aimal Faizi, said that both Hagel and General Dunford had been responsive to President Karzai?s views. "They understand our concerns," Faizi said. "Hagel noted that both sides should learn from their mistakes."
