Lifetime takes liberties with Jodi Arias movie

TV

The Jodi Arias murder trial was must-watch TV for five months this year because it had everything: young beautiful people; sex, lies, photos and audiotapes; religious obstacles; and a particularly heinous tragic ending.

A month after a jury could not decide unanimously if the convicted murderer should be sentenced to death, Lifetime taking the story of Travis Alexander?s brutal death to the small screen. ?Jodi Arias: Dirty Little Secret,? a title inspired by Arias? lawyer?s opening argument, premieres Saturday at 8 p.m. The two-hour film starring Tania Raymonde (?Lost?) as Arias and Jesse Lee Soffer (?The Mob Doctor?) as Alexander covers their turbulent and brief relationship more than it does the courtroom drama.

Arias, 32, spent 18 days on the witness stand, where she shared sordid details of every intimate relationship she?s been in as well as her time with Alexander. From her favorite drinks and snacks to her many trips with Alexander to their dirty talk and Tootsie Pops and Pop Rocks trysts, Arias left nothing out?except for a plausible explanation for why she killed a man she said she wanted to marry. Along the way, we heard all the lies Arias told the police, media and anyone who would listen before, during, and after the murder. Then she told some more to the jury.

If there was one story that did not need embellishing, it was this one. But "Dirty Little Secret" co-writers Richard Blaney and Gregory Small do take some creative licenses and fill in a few blanks the trial did not cover. What's real and what's not? Here's your guide to five of the larger departures. Spoiler alert!

1.Las Vegas, 2006

TRIALFACT: Arias and Alexander met in Sin City at the first Prepaid Legal Services convention she attended. She testified that he made a beeline to introduce himself at a mixer and later invited her to a dinner for executives as his guest. Because he was so ?attentive,? she said she had to tell him that she lived with her boyfriend and was ?monogamous.?

FILMFICTION: As Alexander gives a speech at a conference about ?putting a bull's-eye? on what you want and not letting anything get in the way, Arias is in the audience taking in every syllable. When he finishes and retreats to the men?s room, she follows him inside. ?I just want you to know that I think you?re amazing,? she says as she barges in and he?s standing at the urinal. Could Arias have been nutty enough to introduce herself to Alexander this way? Perhaps if she had, Alexander would have stayed clear of her.

2.Sexual Encounter No. 1

FACT: After the Las Vegas conference, Arias went home to Palm Desert, Calif., and broke up with her boyfriend. Four days later, she and Alexander met at a friend?s house in Temecula, Calif., where he snuck into her room in the middle of the night and gave her oral sex, she testified. She removed his Mormon temple garments and returned the favor. ?There was no conversation,? she testified. ?I thought there was going to be, but there wasn?t. We sat down and started passionately kissing?I was apprehensive but I was going with it. I didn?t want to tell him no.?

FICTION: During a very awkward conversation full of cheesy sexual innuendos, Arias comes on to Alexander and invites herself to his hotel room to ?drink coffee.? Alexander responds by giving her a little pep talk about why she blows him away and he must refuse. The next night, however, Alexander drinks his coffee. Black.

3.Alexander?s best friends warn him to break up with Arias

FACT: Although Chris Hughes, Alexander?s best friend, was not asked about this incident when he testified, he and his wife appeared regularly on HLN during the trial and told the story of the night Arias scared them to the point they asked her never to return to their house again. While Arias was supposed to be sleeping in the middle of the night, they had a talk with Alexander in their bedroom about their concerns about her bizarre and possessive behavior. Sky Hughes said she felt a bad vibe and told Alexander to open the door. Arias, who had been eavesdropping, was standing there and gave them a ?creepy? look that frightened them enough to tell her to stay away.

FICTION: Sitting by Alexander?s pool, the Hughes talk to Alexander about Arias? obsessive behavior. ?We don?t like her for you.? Alexander responds by saying they don?t need to worry because he?s not in it for the long-term. Arias opens the door and startles them. She and Alexander then get into a fight. ?You think I?m gonna be your booty call forever? If so, man up and tell me,? she begs. Alexander breaks up with her. But it doesn?t end there.

4.The Day of the Murder

FACT: In April 2008, Arias packed up her things and moved to Yreka, Calif., to live with her grandparents. On June 4, 2008, while supposedly en route to Utah on Prepaid Legal business, Arias drove 1000 miles to Alexander?s home in Mesa, Arizona, arriving around 4 a.m. Thirteen hours later, she slashed his throat, stabbed him 28 other times and shot him once in the head and then drove to Utah where she made out with another man.

FICTION: At one point after their break-up, Arias is shown in Yreka, Calif. at her grandparents? house, holding her grandfather?s gun. But then Arias shows up at Alexander?s Arizona house around midnight on June 4, 2008 and tells him she is there to say goodbye because she is moving to Yreka. After some weird talk about how easy she is to be with, Alexander asks her if she wants to spend the night.

5.Travis Alexander?s Death

FACT: We will never know exactly why Arias killed Alexander unless she decides to fess up. She said their fight started when she accidentally dropped the camera after they?d spent the afternoon having sex and photographing one another. The prosecution argued it was all a pre-meditated set-up as Arias was in a jealous rage because he was going to Cancun, Mexico, with another woman. If Arias couldn?t have him, nobody could, the prosecution argued.

FICTION: A text from Katie (his new girlfriend) asking Alexander to meet to talk sends Arias into a rage as Alexander begins to shower. Angrily, Arias directs Alexander to pose for pictures in the shower until she gets him into the vulnerable position she is seeking. Within minutes, his life is over as she surprises him with the knife and later shoots him.

Our Verdict

Raymonde does an admirable job of channeling Arias' crazy-behind-the-eyes behavior trial followers heard described nightly on HLN as well as her insecurities. But Soffer doesn't do justice to Alexander's charisma and swagger, so it's hard to buy her obsession with him. The movie probably would have benefitted from some distance from the irresistible trial. Too much of this sad saga is engrained in our minds.

Neighbors: Couple killed waited for order to leave

DENVER (AP) ? Bob and Barbara Schmidt dashed to their home on a dirt road in a heavily wooded area northeast of Colorado Springs as smoke from what would become the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history filled the air.

After quickly grabbing a few items, they spotted their neighbors.

"They were sitting on their porch, watching TV," said Bob Schmidt, adding that his wife urged their neighbors to immediately flee as smoke rolled in at 4:35 p.m. on June 11. "They said they'd leave when they needed to."

The couple, Marc and Robin Herklotz, told the Schmidts they hadn't gotten automated calls from authorities ordering them to evacuate and that, while they were packing and monitoring the approaching blaze on TV, they weren't panicking.

On Tuesday, authorities announced that the lone casualties of the Black Forest Fire were the Herklotzes, whose bodies were found in their garage on Jicarilla Drive by their car, as if they were trying to flee.

Bob Schmidt said he had received a call June 11 telling him to leave immediately but that the Herklotzes said they did not get such a call. Their homes lay just outside the mandatory evacuation boundary announced on Twitter by the El Paso County at 3:34 p.m. that day. The zone was expanded to include Jicarilla Drive at 5:36 p.m.

El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said that someone had spoken to the Herklotzes on the phone at about 5 p.m. and heard a popping sound ? most likely the fire racing through the thick trees.

Marc Allen Herklotz, 52, and Robin Lauran Herklotz, 50, worked at Air Force Space Command, which operates military satellites, and were based at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, the Air Force said in a written statement. He entered the Air Force in 1983 but most recently was working as a civilian employee, and his wife was an Air Force contractor.

The couple lived in a three-bedroom house assessed at $281,000, according to property records. Schmidt said the Herklotzes were fixtures in the area, walking their dog every night and coming by to get eggs laid by the chickens Schmidt and his wife kept. A few weeks ago, he said, they worked filling in potholes on the narrow dirt cul de sac where they all lived.

"They loved the forest," Schmidt said of the couple.

The Black Forest Fire has destroyed more than 500 homes and charred more than 22 square miles. It was 85 percent contained Tuesday.

Maketa said that additional home loss is not anticipated, though the count would likely rise.

"What you're seeing today is not new damage," the sheriff said.

Investigators continued searching Tuesday for clues to what started the wildfire. Authorities don't believe natural causes are to blame but haven't elaborated on a possible cause.

They concentrated on a 40-foot-by-40-foot area but haven't said whether they think the fire was started accidentally or on purpose.

In California, officials said it was an unattended campfire near a main route into Yosemite National Park that grew into a blaze that led to the evacuations of 1,500 people from 800 homes. Nearly half of those people were allowed to return as firefighters gained ground late Tuesday.

A wind-whipped wildfire in Arizona grew to nearly 8 square miles by Tuesday evening and was within 400 yards of some homes west of Prescott, authorities said. Hundreds of homes and people have been evacuated by the so-called Doce Fire, which began shortly before noon Tuesday.

Best cross-platform messaging apps every iPhone owner should know about!

Best cross-platform messaging apps every iPhone owner should know about!

iMore's guide to the best, most reliable, and most widely used cross-platform messaging apps that are available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone.

What will it take to get every app on every platform? That's the question we're asking on Talk Mobile today. When it comes to messaging solutions, there's definitely some fragmentation present. Odds are you have friends that don't have iPhones, but Androids or BlackBerries instead. Since iMessage is exclusive to iOS and OS X, you'll have to find another option to communicate with friends and family on other platforms. While texting is always a viable option domestically, international messaging is still an issue for many.

Here are the messaging apps we think you should check out if you need a better way to communicate with all the Android, BlackBerry, and WindowsPhone users out there.

Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger for iPhone

If you use Facebook and all your other friends do, Facebook Messenger is an easy and convenient way to converse with friends and family either over WiFi or over the cellular network. Facebook Messenger is a separate app download outside of the regular Facebook app and focuses strictly on messaging.

With support for push notifications, group conversations, and more, it's a message option that your friends are most likely already tied into. Facebook Messenger is currently available for iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry.

Whatsapp

Whatsapp for iPhone

Whatsapp has been around for quite a while and provides an easy and free way to send messages. With over 200 million registered Whatsapp users, you may find more people using it than you think. Whatsapp is also available for a broad number of platforms including iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Nokia S40, and Symbian. That should about cover any platforms you need to.

Whatsapp also supports unlimited group messaging as well as unlimited audio, video, and photo sharing. It's also got a pretty nice interface which is an added bonus.

Skype

Skype for iPhone

Skype is one of the most widely used platforms on the internet when it comes to audio and video conferencing with over 300 million registered users to date. Let's also not forget that it has pretty good messaging capabilities built right in. Recent updates have also given it a pretty clean and elegant interface as well. Skype also comes equipped with push notifications so you know you're receiving your messages when you need to.

Skype to Skype messaging will be free, anywhere in the world. Skype has apps available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone.

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts for iPhone

Google Hangouts is a great place to chat with friends in groups or individually and if you are already tied into Google services such as Gmail, you'll be right at home since all your contacts from Google+ will automatically import.

Not only is Hangouts feature rich, it's also a gorgeous app. If you're looking forward to iOS 7 and like the design it carriers, Google seems to get it when it comes to flat interfaces and Hangouts is no exception. Everything from the way contacts are laid out to chat bubbles is carefully thought out and gorgeous.

Kik

Kik for iPhone

Kik has been around for quite some time and has a user base of over 50 million users. The thing I really like about Kik is the user interface. It's clean and easy to navigate. Push notifications are super fast and it can automatically pull in anyone you know that's already using Kik, just like Whatsapp can.

Kik may not have as many users as some of the other big guys but it's still a very viable alternative if you don't fancy any of the others and can convince your friends Kik is the way to go. Kik has apps for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and Ovi. It's worth noting that the BlackBerry version of the app is not supported by RIM and will need to be downloaded on its own.

Piip

Piip for iPhone

Piip is another cross-platform messaging option that a lot of people forget about. It's got support for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Phone as well as many other devices. While I prefer the interface and design of apps like Skype and Kik better, Piip is also very good at what it does and has a pretty large user base as well.

Piip features include unlimited sending of group messages, message status reports, and photo, video, and audio sharing. Much like the other guys, Piip does what it says it does, and does it well.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM)

BlackBerry Messenger for iPhone

BlackBerry Messenger isn't out for iPhone and Android just yet but should be later this summer. RIM has a stellar track record with BBM and it's a service many BlackBerry users past have sorely missed when migrating to other platforms.

We're sure BlackBerry Messenger will be a crowd favorite once it's officially launched for iPhone and Android. If you have a lot of friends using BlackBerries, you'll have instant access to them the minute you download BBM. We'll have a more thorough review of the service as soon as its available later in the summer.

SMS messaging

Text Message iPhone 5

If you're only concerned about sending messages within your home country and don't have a need for international texting, regular SMS may be the best option and it's something that comes equipped on every smartphone nowadays. Not only that, most carriers now bundle unlimited text messages with shared data plans which makes it more attainable than before.

If none of the apps above catch your fancy or you can't get all your friends to jump on board with only one cross-platform messaging solution, native SMS may be the safest bet across the board.

Your picks?

What do you use for either cross-platform messaging or to send international text messages as a cheaper alternative to native SMS? These are some of our favorites but we know, you the readers, find some great ones on your own as well. Let us know in the comments!

Miley Cyrus talks alcohol vs. marijuana dangers

Celebs

Miley Cyrus in Los Angeles on June 12.

A few years ago, Miley Cyrus learned firsthand the perils of unguarded moments in the digital age when video surfaced of her using a bong, supposedly to smoke a legal substance called salvia -- an incident she later spoofed on "Saturday Night Live." While the pop singer doesn't exactly cop to smoking pot in a new interview with Rolling Stone's Rob Tannenbaum, she doesn't deny it, either.

Stars Go Punk at Met Gala: Miley Cyrus

"I did a song with Snoop Dogg called 'Ashtrays and Heartbreaks,' so people can put it together for themselves," Cyrus says. "I think alcohol is way more dangerous than marijuana -- people can be mad at me for saying that, but I don't care. I've seen a lot of people spiral down with alcohol, but I've never seen that happen with weed."

Marijuana users tend to be more laid-back, Cyrus observes, noting, "As long as it isn't illegal, there are far more dangerous things. And it's legal in the state of California. So I'm happy to live in California, a place where you can be whoever you want to be."

Snoop Lion and Miley Cyrus' Clip for 'Ashtrays and Heartbreaks'

Pot isn't the only illicit substance Cyrus discusses: there's molly, too. The form of ecstasy has popped up in hip-hop this year, to the chagrin of Rick Ross and the disgust of Kendrick Lamar. The way Cyrus pronounces a word in her new song "We Can't Stop" has prompted speculation that she's singing about molly, though she insists she says "Miley."

"I have an accent! So when I say 'Miley,' it must sound like 'molly,'" she says. "You're not allowed to say 'molly' on the radio, so it obviously says 'Miley.' I knew people were gonna wonder what I'm saying in that song."

Not that "Miley" is free of drug connotations, either. "People refer to [cocaine] as 'Miley Cyrus,'" she says, citing Ross' verse on Meek Mills' song "Believe It." "My name is used in hip-hop songs to mean that. So even if I'm saying 'Miley,' people could still find something wrong with it."

The full Q&A with Cyrus will be available in the July 4 summer double issue of Rolling Stone.

Soprano paved the way for today's antiheroes

TV

Image: Michael C. Hall as Dexter on "Dexter," Bryan Cranston as Walter White on "Breaking Bad," and Jon Hamm as Don Draper on "Mad Men."

Showtime / AMC

Michael C. Hall as Dexter on "Dexter," Bryan Cranston as Walter White on "Breaking Bad," and Jon Hamm as Don Draper on "Mad Men."

When "The Sopranos" hit the small screen in 1999, there wasn't a leading character on television to compare to troubled patriarch Tony Soprano. Sure, the big screen had long since made room for complex antiheroes. Heck, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Clint Eastwood crafted careers by bringing those types to life. But TV is different.

Viewers develop long-term relationships with the familiar faces on weekly dramas. Audiences were used to cheering for the good guys they knew and loved and waiting for the baddies to finally get what was coming to them. So why would they tune in to see a lead like Tony Soprano?

Because of an actor like James Gandolfini.

It would have been easy to play Tony bigger than life -- he was a bigger than life character. He was equal parts tough guy, wise guy, ruthless killer and devoted father, flawed husband and struggling soul. That's what made him a tough sell. But Gandolfini somehow balanced the exaggeration that was inherent to the world of a crime boss with the mundane, every-man existence behind it. Sure, he cracked open a few heads, but he also fed the ducks that called his pool home. He was quick on the trigger, but he was also a hit around the barbecue.

He made Tony real. He made the unlikable, likable.

In doing so, Gandolfini, unintentionally, helped change the face of TV. His appealing portrayal of a gritty, unappealing guy ushered in the era of the modern TV antihero. The bad guys, the morally ambiguous guys, the not-your-typical-leading-man guys -- their time had finally come.

Which means there are plenty of actors who owe a debt of gratitude to Gandolfini. If viewers hadn't connected to his portrayal of Tony Soprano, would they have even had the chance to connect to Michael C. Hall's portrayal of Dexter Morgan in "Dexter"? The serial killer with a moral compass may seem miles away from the mobster, but both characters possess a strong sense of right and wrong, as well as a taste for bloody business. Tony came first. He was the test. In passing the test, Gandolfini made way for Hall and many others.

Jon Hamm's downward spiral as Don Draper on "Mad Men" is often Tony-esque, especially in the way he can hop from his mistress's arms to his marital bed without a moment's regret. Bryan Cranston's far darker descent as Walter White on "Breaking Bad" sees a basically good -- or at-one-time good -- man find a way to justify death and destruction, just as Tony did again and again. And Michael Chiklis' brutal-with-cause Vic Mackey on "The Shield" shared Tony's satisfaction in "convincing" an enemy to divulge hidden information.

They all benefitted from the ground Gandolfini broke -- as do audiences, who get to enjoy some of the most complex characters to ever grace the small screen.

Dish won't submit revised bid for Sprint

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? Satellite TV operator Dish Network Corp. said Tuesday it would not submit a revised bid for Sprint, leaving the path open for the wireless carrier to accept what it already considers a superior offer from Japan's Softbank.

Dish said that Sprint Nextel Corp.'s decision to cut Dish's due diligence process short, among other things, made it "impracticable" to submit a revised bid. It said it will continue to focus on its bid for Clearwire, a wireless network operator in which Sprint has a majority stake.

"We will consider our options with respect to Sprint, and focus our efforts and resources on completing the Clearwire tender offer," Dish said.

Sprint had given Dish until Tuesday to make its best and final offer. Sprint's demand came after Softbank last week boosted its bid for the carrier by $1.5 billion to $21.6 billion, which Sprint considers the best offer. While that's still short of Dish's $25.5 billion bid, Dish's proposal would add more to Sprint's debt load and is seen as more risky.

Sprint shares fell 11 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $7.21 in after-hours trading Tuesday. Dish shares were up 5 cents at $39.14 after-hours, while Clearwire shares rose 8 cents to $4.64.

Softbank in Tokyo welcomed Dish Network's decision.

"We look forward to the receipt of FCC and shareholders' approvals, which will allow us to close the deal in early July, and begin the hard work of building the new Sprint into a meaningful third competitor in the U.S. market," the company said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Sprint bolstered its defenses against Dish's grab for a stake in Clearwire.

Late Monday, Sprint filed a suit in the Delaware Court of Chancery asking the court to block Dish's $4.40-per-share offer for Clearwire, saying it cannot complete its offer without the approval of holders of at least 75 percent of Clearwire's shares.

Sprint, headquartered in Overland Park, Kan., also contends that the deal violates shareholder rights under Clearwire's charter and an equity holders' agreement.

Sprint had bid $3.40 per share for the shares in Clearwire which it doesn't already own.

Dish, based in Englewood, Colo., called the litigation a "transparent attempt" by Sprint to divert attention away from its failure to deal fairly with Clearwire shareholders. The satellite broadcaster said in a statement it was confident its offer will be upheld.

Clearwire Corp. said it doesn't comment on pending litigation. Clearwire is based in Bellevue, Wash.

Softbank, one of Japan's largest wireless phone operators, is seeking to expand its footprint overseas with the Sprint acquisition and says it can reap benefits like saving money on large-scale orders of handsets and equipment.

Dish, whose traditional business is providing pay TV services, is meanwhile trying to amass enough rights to the airwaves to diversify into the mobile phone and other businesses.

Clashes erupt in Egypt over Islamist governor

CAIRO (AP) ? Clashes have erupted between supporters and opponents of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood over the recent appointment of an Islamist governor in a northern city.

Security forces fired tear gas to separate the two groups on Tuesday in the Nile Delta city of Tanta, an anti-Brotherhood stronghold.

The fighting broke out after opposition protesters chained up the gate to the new governor's office in a symbolic rejection of his appointment.

Brotherhood supporters, armed with homemade forearms, swords and knives, started shooting at the protesters to clear them away and let Gov. Ahmed el-Baylie into his office.

President Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood, appointed el-Baylie on Sunday along with 16 other governors in an effort to consolidate power ahead of opposition protests on June 30 that will call for his ouster.

Sentencing in theft of 'Idol' contestant's iPhone

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) ? A woman has been sentenced to eight days in jail for stealing a former "American Idol" contestant's iPhone while the singer was performing at a California elementary school.

City News Service reports 47-year-old Bertha Alicia Avalos, of Santa Ana, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor theft charges Monday and was sentenced immediately.

Todrick Dramaul Hall reported his phone missing after a performance at Hazard Elementary School in Santa Ana.

Hall and a school security guard used the "Find My iPhone" feature on the device to track the phone to a grocery store where Avalos was shopping with her son, a student at the school.

Avalos gave the phone back to Hall. He wanted to press charges, so she was taken into custody later at her home.

Hall was an "Idol" contestant in 2010.

In Imitation of St. Joseph, Model of Fathers of Families - Living Faith ...

Drawing from the traditional Litany of St. Joseph and the writing of the Popes on St. Joseph, we hope to sketch some of the virtues of human fatherhood.? As Leo XIII said in his encyclical on St. Joseph, "Fathers of families find in Joseph the best personification of paternal solicitude and vigilance."? This was confirmed by Blessed John Paul II, who in a meditation on St. Joseph, observed that St. Joseph is "a perfect incarnation of fatherhood in the human and at the same time holy family."

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (Catholic Online) - It may be said that fatherhood is the vocation of all men.? Though "Father's Day" focuses on the fathers of human families, fatherhood itself is a broader concept.? Fatherhood is, in fact, a highly analogical word.? That is one reason the term can be applied to God the Father, from whom all fatherhood, in heaven and on earth, is named.? (Cf. Eph. 3:14-15)

Fatherhood is a relationship that is much more than biological fatherhood.? We understand that when we commonly acknowledge St. Joseph to be a father to Jesus, though he was not his biological father.? As Pope Benedict XVI noted in 2009, St. Joseph "is not the biological father of Jesus, whose Father is God alone, and yet he lives his fatherhood fully and completely."

In this article, we will focus on the qualities of St. Joseph, who is often called the Umbra Patris, the "Shadow of God the Father," to try to understand the characteristics of human fatherhood which find their origin in God and the Father, and which are honored by Americans on this day.?

Drawing from the traditional Litany of St. Joseph and the writing of the Popes on St. Joseph, we hope to sketch some of the virtues of human fatherhood.? As Leo XIII said in his encyclical on St. Joseph Quamquam pluries (No. 4), "Fathers of families find in Joseph the best personification of paternal solicitude and vigilance."? This was confirmed by Blessed John Paul II, who in a meditation on St. Joseph, observed that St. Joseph is "a perfect incarnation of fatherhood in the human and at the same time holy family."

A father acts justly.? Justice is one of the four cardinal virtues which every father must nourish and practice.? A father treats those with whom he comes in contact, in particular those who are members of his household with justice.? St. Joseph, the Scriptures say, was a "just man" (Matt. 1:9), and so sought a way to handle Mary's "'astonishing' motherhood" with justice.? (JP II, Redemptoris custos, No. 3)? While just, St. Joseph was also open to the equities of mercy.? He was also aware that, in applying justice, the just man must consider all extenuating circumstances, even the most unexpected circumstance of Mary's conception by the Holy Spirit.

A father is chaste.? We call St. Joseph "the most chaste spouse" for a reason, and he exhibited heroic chastity.? However, all men are called to chaste living.? Chastity in marriage means, above all, conjugal fidelity to one's wife.? More broadly, however, it means also rigorous conformity with the Church's teaching of human sexuality, including rejection of the modern ills of unnatural sex, artificial contraception, and pornography, as these are destructive of the marital relationship and the family and are intrinsically anti-life and so unbefitting to a virtuous man.? This purity is spiritually required, as only the pure in heart shall see God.? (Matt. 5:8)

A father exercises prudence.? St. Joseph, we pray in the Roman Missal at the Preface for the Solemnity of his feast, was placed "at the head of his family, as a faithful and prudent servant."? Prudence, which might be defined as "right reason in action," is called by St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Bernard of Clairvaux the auriga virtutum or charioteer of virtues.? It is a habitual disposition to dispose "practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it."? CCC ? 1806.? For its proper exercise, it obviously requires maturity, discipline, obedience to the natural moral law, and openness to God.

A father exhibits strength.? The strength exhibited by a father is not necessarily physical strength, but moral and spiritual strength, that is, the internal power, force, vigor, and moral stamina of human character required to do right when difficult and avoid evil when temptation beckons.? In short, a father has the virtues of fortitude, the strength to do good in adversity, and temperance, the strength to avoid evil when tempted.

A father is obedient to God and ...

Union ratchets up pressure on Amazon Germany

BERLIN (AP) ? Union members at online retailer Amazon's German operations have begun a two-day strike to ratchet up pressure on the company over pay demands.

The ver.di union says workers at Amazon's distribution centers in Leipzig and Bad Hersfeld began the strike Monday following three earlier one-day strikes since May.

The union says Amazon's roughly 5,300 workers at the sites receive lower wages than their peers in the online retail industry.

Amazon says workers are performing mainly logistical work and should therefore receive pay levels appropriate for that industry.

European Filmmakers Declare Victory in Culture Trade War - The ...

Getty Images

EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht bowed to French pressure to take the cultural industries out of upcoming free trade talks with the U.S.

COLOGNE, Germany ? European filmmakers opposed to the film and television industries being included in upcoming free-trade talks between the European Union and the United States have declared victory after EU trade ministers announced culture will not be on the negotiating table, at least for now.

?A wonderful victory for European Culture,? wrote two-time Palme d'Or winners, Belgian directors Jean Pierre and Luc Dardenne in a release following the announcement, which came after closed door talks on Friday night. The Dardenne brothers are at the forefront of a group of European filmmakers, which also includes such acclaimed auteurs as Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Stephen Frears and Pablo Almodovar, who have demanded Europe's cultural industry remain protected from direct competition with Hollywood.

The protectionist camp is strongest in France, where strict quotas dictate at least 60 percent of all films broadcast on French TV in primetime be of European origin and 40 percent be French.

France had threatened to torpedo the upcoming trade talks if culture was not taken off the negotiating table. Other countries, particularly Britain, have welcomed more open competition in the cultural sphere.

After more than 12 hours of closed-door meetings on Friday, the EU eventually agreed, saying the arts industry will not be part of initial trade negotiations, expected to begin at next week's G8 summit in London. But EU trade commissioner Karel De Gucht left the door open, saying he would discuss the matter further with American negotiators. De Gucht has expressed fears that excluding culture from the wide-ranging trade talks could lead to a tit-for-tat approach, with the U.S. adding protectionist measures of its own.

A new free-trade deal between the EU and the U.S. would be huge. Together, the two account for around a third of global trade and around half of global economic output. Forecasts estimate the deal, called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) could boost the stagnant European economy by some $160 billion per year and add close to $130 billion annually to the U.S. economy.

The cultural industries are only a tiny part of that. America's trade surplus with Europe in that area (music, film, radio and TV) averaged $2 billion a year between 2004-2011.

Russian tycoon Dmitry Itskov speaks at the Global Future 2045 Congress at the Lincoln Center in New York on June 15, 2013.

Can the City That Never Sleeps become the City That Never Dies? A Russian multimillionaire thinks so.

Dmitry Itskov gathered some of humanity's best brains ? and a few robots ? in New York City on Saturday to discuss how humans can get their minds to outlive their bodies. Itskov, who looks younger than his 32 years, has an aggressive timetable in which he'd like to see milestones toward that goal met:

  • By 2020, robots we can control remotely with our brains.
  • By 2025, a scenario familiar to watchers of sci-fi cartoon show "Futurama:" the capability to transplant the brain into a life-support system, which could be a robot body. Essentially, a robot prosthesis that can replace an ailing, perhaps dying body.
  • By 2035, the ability to move the mind into a computer, eliminating the need for the robot bodies to carry around wet, messy brains.
  • By 2045, technology nirvana in the form of artificial brains controlling insubstantial, hologram bodies.

The testimony of the neuroscience experts invited to Itskov's Global Future 2045 conference at Lincoln Center in the New York City's Manhattan borough indicate that Itskov's timetable is ambitious to the point of being unrealistic. But the gathering was a rare public airing of questions that will face us as technology progresses.

Is immortality desirable, and if so, what's the best way to get there? Do we leave behind something essentially human if we leave our bodies behind? If you send your robot copy to work, do you get paid?

Japanese robotics researcher Hiroshi Ishiguro's presentation started out with a life-size, like-like robot representation of himself on stage.

The robot moved its lips, nodded and moved it eyes while a hidden loudspeaker played up Ishiguro's voice. Apart from a stiff posture and a curious splay of the hands, the robot could be mistaken for a human, at least 10 rows from the stage.

Ishiguro uses this android or "Geminoid" (after the Latin word for "twin") to meet with students at a research institute two hours away from the laboratory where he also has an appointment. He controls it through the Internet, and sees his students through a webcam.

Russian tycoon Dmitry Itskov speaks to the Global Future 2045 Congress at the Lincoln Center in New York on June 15, 2013.

"The problem is, if I use this android, the research institute says it cannot pay for me," Ishiguro said, to laughter from the audience of hundreds of journalists, academics, Buddhist monks and futurism enthusiasts.

Ishiguro flew to the U.S. with his robotic twin's head, the most valuable part, in the carry-on luggage. The body rode below, in the luggage compartment.

To Itskov, who made his money in the Russian Internet media business, the isolated achievements of inventors like Ishiguro are not enough. He wants to create a movement, involving governments and the United Nations, to work toward a common goal.

"We shouldn't just observe the wonderful entrepreneurs, we need to move ahead systematically," Itskov said in an interview. "We are really at the time when technology can affect human evolution. I want us to shape the future, bring it up for public discussion, and avoid any scenario that could damage humanity."

Itskov says he tries to eliminate his "selfishness" day by day, and has spent about $3 million promoting his vision. He organized the first conference on the theme in Russia last year.

But in bringing the idea to the U.S., a cultural difference is apparent: Itskov's desire for a shared, guiding vision for humanity does not mesh well with the spirit of the American high-tech industry, which despises government involvement and prizes its freedom to pursue whatever projects it wants.

Space entrepreneur and X-Prize Chairman Peter Diamandis articulated that spirit at the conference; the freewheeling capitalist system, he said, is one of the strongest engines for effecting change.

"The rate of change is going so fast, I do not believe any of our existing government systems can handle it," he said.

Archbishop Lazar Puhalo of the Orthodox Church in America, who has a background in neurobiology and physics, offered another critique at the conference.

"A lot of this stuff can't be done," he said.

If it can be done, that's not necessarily a good thing either, the robed and bearded patriarch believes.

"I'm not too fond of the idea of immortality, because I think it will be deathly boring," he said, with a twinkle in his eyes. Giving up our bodies could also be problematic, he said.

"There's a lot of stuff in them that makes us human. I'm not sure they can be built into machines," Puhalo said.

Itskov acknowledges that his vision would leave part of the human experience behind. But he believes it would be worth it.

"We're always losing something for what we're doing. We're always paying," Itskov said.
