From mountain to city, home is where the heart is - Bloom

I?m excited to share with you an interview with Michelle Miller of Cypress, Calif. Michelle, her husband Michael, and daughter Maya welcomed Michelle?s nephew Dmitri (above left) into their family in 2011 after the death of both of his parents. Michelle runs Fickle Knitter Design?writing books for people who knit?but had no experience with children with disabilities. Dmitri, now 10, has Down syndrome and autism. Michelle?s daughter Maya is 6. The family brought Dmitri from his home on a rural mountain in Virginia to a city in Orange County, Calif. in October 2011.

BLOOM: What events led to your adopting Dmitri?

Michelle Miller: My brother-in-law Ric?Dmitri?s father?was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2010. In January of 2011, my sister Miriam died from pneumonia. It was totally unexpected as she was only 45, healthy and young. She had been caring for both her husband while he was sick and Dmitri. I thought it was in everyone?s best interest for Dmitri to spend as much time as possible with his dad, before he died, and we did that with the help of family and some respite care. I went and lived there for three months to take care of them until Dmitri?s father passed away in September. We then had to wait another month for the court to grant me legal guardianship and at the end of October we brought Dmitri back to California with us.

BLOOM: Did you have any experience?caring for children with disabilities?

Michelle Miller: No I didn?t. My sister and I talked two times a week for a couple of hours each time, so I knew about Dmitri?s life extensively, but that?s not the same as physically being there. I really hadn?t had any experience with disabled children at that point. I had friends who were disabled growing up in school, but I?d never been in the role of caretaker.

BLOOM: When did you make the decision to adopt Dmitri?

Michelle Miller: The night my sister passed away I knew I?m the youngest and best equipped in our family to be able to care for him. But for months I worried: Would I be able to do it all and would I do it well? It was scary.

BLOOM: What was Dmitri like when you stayed with him and his dad?

Michelle Miller: I look so much like my sister and when he came home and saw me he went upstairs and cried. It was hard for me to know it was hurting him to see me. He had a lot of behaviours at that time and he fought me at every turn. I?m sure some of those behaviours were anger and grief at not having his mom around. He was doing dangerous things and didn?t have any concept of danger. When I first got to Virginia it was a battle everyday just to get him dressed and I thought: How will I do this everyday for the rest of my life? It was hard. One of his respite-care workers said he viewed me as a maternal figure, and that was why he was testing me. That helped me get through it a lot.

BLOOM: How does Dmitri communicate?

Michelle Miller: He can nod his head yes and no, and if he doesn?t want to do something he?ll sit down. And that includes if he doesn?t want to cross the street: he?ll sit down in the middle of oncoming traffic! Because he?d been through so much, if he didn?t want to do something, I didn?t want to make him do it. I struggled with that. That?s one thing I was able to talk to his dad about and work out. His dad told me that he and his mother decided early on that Dmitri was going to have to do things he doesn?t want to do because that?s part of being alive.

BLOOM: How did you manage to stay positive while caring for your brother-in-law who was dying and your nephew who was grieving?

Michelle Miller: I just tried to stay in the moment as much as possible. I definitely didn?t complain. I wanted Ric to have faith that my husband and I would do a good job. My daughter wasn?t in school yet so she came and stayed with us for a couple of weeks at a time.

BLOOM: What was the most challenging part about bringing Dmitri into your family?

Michelle Miller: Learning how to get him to do the things he needs to do everyday. But I?ve figured out how to motivate him. Chicken nuggets and ice cream are good motivators. He?s a good boy and although he still sometimes doesn?t want to do things, he?s a different kid now.

BLOOM: How did he adjust to coming to live with you?

Michelle Miller: He still had some behavioural issues but he seemed to feel at home right away. We changed the guest room into his room and bought him some special furniture and brought comfort items of his from Virginia. It seemed like he knew this was where he was going to be. But it took a lot longer for him to feel really comfortable.

BLOOM: How did your daughter adapt?

Michelle Miller: She?s amazing. When Dmitri?s dad was still alive, she asked me if Dmitri was going to be her brother. She was only five at the time and I didn?t know how she was able to perceive that. She?s great when we go out in public. She?ll tell people ?This is my brother. He doesn?t talk and he has autism.? Dmitri?s dad said Maya was the first kid he ever played with. He would let her come into his room and play with his toys. They would hang out together?more side by side than play. Dmitri lived on a mountain in a very isolated area, so he hadn?t had play dates and regular contact with kids. Maya?s been a tremendous influence on his life and I think a lot of his gains have been through being around her. Now he has regular contact with other children.

BLOOM: How have you changed since Dmitri became your son?

Michelle Miller: You?re trying to get me to cry, aren?t you? I?ve changed a lot. The strides Dmitri makes may be little in other people?s eyes, but I know how hard he?s working and how much he?s accomplished. I embrace and value the small things a lot more. I feel so grateful for everything that I have.

BLOOM: How do you keep the memory of his first parents alive?

Michelle Miller: He hears us talking about them a lot. My sister was a photographer and we have her photos hanging in the house. We have pictures of him and his parents together. My sister was such a big part of my life that it?s something we talk about often.

BLOOM: How did you learn to get the services Dmitri needed and advocate for him?

Michelle Miller: I have a background in physics and that gave me a really good ability to do research. In the months while Dmitri?s dad was still alive, I found out about the agency that provides services to people in our county and I started e-mail contact with them. I talked to as many other parents of children with disabilities as I could, and I read books. There are a lot of wonderful services for disabled folks here, including the special school for children with disabilities that Dmitri attends. Many of the services are offered through our Regional Center system and often are subsidized through special programs. Right now we do respite care and will soon start?ABA therapy through Orange County.

BLOOM: Would you say this opened up a new world to you?

Michelle?Miller: Yes. We now have a family that we do play dates with that has a son with autism. And we?ve met other families of children with disabilities.

BLOOM: It sounds like having your own business allows you to balance the needs of your kids and your work.

Michelle Miller: It?s wonderful. I?m able to put Dmitri on the bus and able to help my daughter get ready for school, and when Dmitri gets off the bus I?m there. If I need to pick either of them up from school? or take Dmitri to doctor appointments, and he has a lot of them?it?s not an issue. I can adjust my schedule. If the kids need something, I can put my work down.

BLOOM: What kind of things does Dmitri enjoy now?

Michelle Miller: He likes electronics and musical toys. A favourite thing of his is a bouncy ball that he?s good at bouncing. He has an MP3 player with children?s music that he likes. And recently he began interacting with an iPad, which really shocked me. He likes Netflix and there?s a group of apps I got for him called Starfall, for reading. I can hear him in his room right now playing the one where he has to do a sequence of events to make the turkey dance.

BLOOM: How did your husband manage with the adoption?

Michelle Miller: He was amazing. He never put up any roadblocks. He came out to visit us and worked remotely. He co-parents with me. He parents Dmitri just like I do.

BLOOM: What practical advice would you offer a family adopting a child with disabilities?

Michelle Miller: I would say reach out and find out what sort of services are available in your local community and network with other parents. Many times you won?t know exactly what services you can get until you speak with other parents. I talked a lot with Dmitri?s respite-care workers in Virginia and every time I go into his school, his teacher and I compare notes and I observe how they interact with him. In some ways you can?t prepare yourself for adopting a child who can?t talk. They?re sort of trapped in themselves.

BLOOM: How is Dmitri doing these days?

Michelle Miller: In the past three to four months he?s become a pretty happy kid. He smiles a lot. He?s really settled and comfortable. If he wants something like the ketchup he?ll go and get it himself, which is pretty huge for him. That shows me that he feels really comfortable and confident.

BLOOM: How do you feel about adopting Dmitri now?

Michelle Miller: I don?t think about it too much. I know it was the right choice and I?m so happy we did it. Even though it?s been really difficult I would do it again in a heart beat.

The Gift of Sex. ~ Jenny Ferry | elephant journal

Source: Uploaded by user via Hm Samarel on Pinterest

?To refuse a gift is to spurn relationship. If gifts create bonds and widen the circle of self, then to refuse to give or receive a gift says, ?I refuse to be connected to you. You are an other in my constellation of being.?? ~ Charles Eisenstein

Rejection stings. Period.

And here I was again. I let him go. Slowly. Reluctantly. Heartbreakingly. After two solid months of creating space to allow him to ?process? his crumbling marriage and erratic behavior, he had taken up commiserating in the arms of another lover (also recently spurned) in the gap I had conveniently created.

Rebound relationships are like that. Drama. Misunderstandings. Totally messy.

Oh, I know messy! I?ve had my fair share of dark descents into the underworld of relationships where broken explicit or implicit agreements, betrayal of trust, plus uncorked and unarticulated desire lurk. Such is the experience of star-crossed lovers. And half-asleep relating.

But why was I here? The answer comes readily to mind. I choose relationships as a crucible for personal development and spiritual growth. And once I transcend the psychological spiel of concocted inner story and press toward viewing my experience through the ontological lens of my higher self, the fog and pain begin to lift.

What awakening bell was sounding? And what wanted to emerge for my understanding and deepening?

There was more to be mined from this interaction.

What was here for me to explore? Was I willing to see, hear and feel the lessons of this fleeting relationship? How might what I?m experiencing benefit the whole?

Here?s what surfaced for me:

The purpose of our lives is to give our gifts in service to something larger than ourselves. In conscious relationship and sexuality, I believe that something else is the third being we co-create. The physical manifestation of that is a child?it?s called procreation.

Infants have a basic way of communicating their needs through crying. In the beginning, a mother attunes to and interprets these pleas for attention and nurtures, in order for the co-created offspring to thrive. As the child grows, it slowly develops more and more autonomy and an expanded ability to communicate and articulate its desires with specificity.

By analogy, this third being is the relationship itself. It has a voice. What is it saying? It has a heartbeat. What is it feeling? It has a body. What is it sensing? Ultimately, what does this third being desire?

This third being co-created in relationship has a soul; it?s sovereign. Whole and complete in and of itself, just like a child. Yet, it?s not seen the full light of our awareness. It?s not been respected, honored or elevated to claim its full birthright in our lives.

In my doomed attempt to create connection with a man who was clearly on the rebound, I viscerally felt the budding third being lose its ground, its centeredness. I heard the voice of the relationship say, ?Please create space for stabilization to occur, Jenny.? I listened and acted according to my experience of this nascent co-creation by requesting a short-term separation. Though agreed upon, my partner?s perception of this fragile voice and nuanced feeling was left unsure and unarticulated. Relationship fail.

In North American culture, we habitually dismiss and neglect this voice, these feelings, and these desires. We disregard the third being?the essence of the relationship itself.

Why? Because we have converted relationship to transaction, we have commodified it. We have reduced it to a transactional service, rather than a gift.

We?ve all been conditioned by transactional relating so that when someone comes along with a gift, we don?t believe it?s given freely. We don?t believe it comes without strings attached. We think it?s a bribe, meant to manipulate us or coerce us. It?s there to seduce us, just like the ubiquitous mass marketing that we?re bombarded with daily.

So we?re caught in a delusion; we think we?re hip to the hype. Yes, we?ve all grown up with it. We think we?re media literate. But are we? Without raising our awareness of this subtle and sly story, we are inextricably wound in the seductive narrative that casts a consumerist glow on our relationships, on our sex.

Do these storylines resonate?

In traditional heterosexual relationship, women think: ?If I give him sex, he?ll love me. Maybe he?ll even marry me.?

This is the classic Disney delusion. An internal narrative that women weave into the fantasy of being rescued and living happily ever after?far from the everyday reality of roll-your-pants-up and wade through the quagmire of uncertainty, instability and deepest abandonment fears. In doing so, we never truly cultivate the courage to assert our voice and request 100 percent of our desire for love, intimacy, connection and?God forbid?sex. Why? So, we don?t have to fear jeopardizing our security and comfort, our personal or social worthiness, including the illusion of perfection.

Men think: ?Oh, if I take her sex, she?ll want to hook me into a real-ationship. Maybe she?ll even rope me into marriage.? This is the story of the archetypal Marlboro Man who doesn?t own anyone and no one owns him. He never has to face his own fear of inadequacy. He refuses to be suffocated by the slow asphyxiation of co-creating specific agreements and heart-centered investments in mindful partnerships. Why? He doesn?t want to hurt her feelings ?or feel his own. He?s free to ride off into the sunset, forever unencumbered. It taps deep into the psychic narrative of our rugged, emotionally detached individualistic culture in North America.

But we?ve completely forgotten the gift. We?ve grossly overlooked the simplicity of basic consideration for each other through respect and honoring the sacredness of our gifts. We?ve forgotten the exquisite value of gratitude and appreciation. Collectively, we?ve dulled the polish of urbane social interaction. We?ve guarded our hearts from fully expressing the healing power of universal caring and compassion.

??people kind of get together and act nice, or maybe they consume together. But joint consumption doesn?t create intimacy. Only joint creativity and gifts create intimacy and connection.? ~ Charles Eisenstein

When we partake in the gift of sex, there?s absolutely nothing to do but say, thank you.

Thank you for being you.
Thank you for sharing your body with me.
Thank you for sharing your most intimate treasure.
Thank you for opening your heart to me.
Thank you for loving me.
Thank you for sharing the gift of yourself.

Collectively, we are being called to return to the gift culture of freely giving and receiving. We are waking up to the voice and feelings of the third being through conscious relationships. We are being called to write a new narrative in intimate relating that doesn?t pin human connection and sexuality to the neoliberal ideology of heartless transaction.

Hand Pain and the Role of the Neck - Dr Davis' Back & Wrist Pain Blog

Hand pain doctors san francisco 94111We have been providing treatment for hand pain in San Francisco for over 20 years now. During this time we have learned much about the role of the neck when it comes to hand pain and carpal tunnel symptoms.?

After-all, the nerves that innervate and control the shoulder, arm, wrist and hand, originate in the neck. The neck is the source of power, energy and life for the upper extremity.

If we were to cut-off the nerve supply from the neck to the hands, the hands would die. If there is diminished nerve supply the hands will malfunction and symptoms will manifest. In order for the hands to function at 100%, they need 100% nerve power. Some of the signs and symptoms of nerve pressure in the neck are as follows:

?

1. Neck Pain

2. Shoulder, Arm, and Elbow Pain

3. Wrist and Hand Pain

4. Numbness and Tingling in the Arms and Hands

5. Weakness of Grip

6. Night Pain

These are also the classic signs and symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). Yes, the same symptoms result from nerve interference between the neck and had as true CTS, which is the result of pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. This is because the median nerve originates in the neck.

Interesting Huh? This is why it is SO important for a doctor to check you from the neck to the fingertips when you have hand pain or any of the other carpal tunnel SYMPTOMS.

There is a subset of chiropractors like us that specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of neck, arm and hand pain. Chiropractic upper extremity experts will incorporate tools such as deep tissue laser therapy, Graston Technique, ART, and upper extremity adjustments, in addition to cervical spine adjustments to remove nerve pressure from the neck to the hands.

Sometimes hand pain will resolve quickly...sometimes it takes a while. It just depends how long your condition has been there and the extent of the damage. One thing for sure...taking pain pills, anti-inflammatory medication such as cortisone injections, and wearing wrist splints, is not going to do much for you if the problem is nerve pressure in the neck from subluxations, bulging or herniated discs, disc degeneration, or muscle spasms.

Physical pressure on nerves (to the hand) requires the removal of the pressure on the nerves or the carpal tunnel symptoms will persist.

If you need help finding a carpal tunnel doctor in your area you can send me an email at ebendavis@yahoo.com and I will try to find a doctor I have trained in your area.

Good Communication Matters | Steve Britton

steve brittonLast month a friend forwarded an article to me. The title of the article was, ?A Broken Heart Can Kill?. I would say the article was interesting, but truthfully, ?disturbing? is probably a more accurate description of my reaction.

The article described what doctors are now calling ?Broken Heart Syndrome.? Broken Heart Syndrome occurs when the heart shuts down physically for emotional reasons. Strong waves of fear, anxiety, anger, grief or other emotions can literally stun the heart muscle to the point where it no longer pumps. So in effect, the Syndrome?s symptoms mimic a heart attack.

The article?s author, therapist and television personality Mary Jo Rapini, writes, ?Study after study has proven you can die from a broken heart, proving further that true love as well as intense grief is felt at a cellular level in the body.? She also reports that recovery is possible, but that treating physicians and therapists agree the best medicine for surviving Broken Heart Syndrome is a quick infusion of communication, connection and support.

In other words ? good communication matters. It matters so much that its presence or absence in our lives can even become a life or death matter.

I mention this now because if there were ever a good time to reorder our priorities in favor of high quality communication and healthier relationships, the month of January is it.?January?is also a great month to have a mini reunion. We have a whole new year stretching out before us ? 12 pristine shiny months we can do whatever we like with. We can spend those months isolating or connecting, laughing or crying, giving or withholding, receiving or rejecting. We can allocate our time to projects or people, conversations or possessions, courtesy or curtness.

Truthfully, we will want and need to do some of each in the year to come. There will be days when we do not feel like talking ? or listening ? and times we are all about sharing our lives with loved ones. There will be times when our emotional resilience is lower and times when we feel emotionally very strong. We will have moments when we have a lot to give and moments when we feel we have little or nothing to offer. This is life ? this is normal ? this is what being human is all about.

But this is also when relationships matter the most. Only the strongest, healthiest relationships can survive the inevitable, unpredictable ups and downs of each participant?s daily life. Since all healthy relationships are built on a foundation of good communication, I thought now would be an excellent time to review some good communication basics.

To do this, I draw from a favorite resource, The New York Times bestselling book (for eight years running) ?The Four Agreements? by don Miguel Ruiz. As you will see, Ruiz? work is all about communication. His four simple Agreements function equally well in professional and personal communication settings. You will also notice how well each Agreement works with and supports the others. After each Agreement I also share a few of my own thoughts about how each can work to support good communications and healthy relationships.

The First Agreement: Be impeccable with your word.

Here, simply be honest. Be forthright. Treat others the way you want to be treated by speaking to others the way you want to be spoken to. Treat yourself well too. Wait to let strong emotions pass before responding in tense situations. Don?t gossip. Seek the highest interpretation for the other person?s words and start the conversation there.

The Second Agreement: Don?t take anything personally.

Remember that just as you think quite a bit about yourself, your goals, your dreams, your hopes and your life, so too are others consumed with similar thoughts about themselves. Whether someone reaches out in anger or in love, their action says far more about their life than they do about yours, or even about your relationship with them or your value to them.

The Third Agreement: Don?t make assumptions.

Rather, ask questions. Making assumptions is a great way to avoid honest conversation. If you catch yourself wondering about something that is said or how someone is acting, recognize that you have an opportunity to make a connection by asking them about it. As well, any time you challenge your own assumptions, do so with kindness towards yourself and others.

The Fourth Agreement: Always do your best.

Recognize here that some days your best will be really good and other days it won?t be good at all. In other words ? keep trying to meet the other participant in the conversation halfway, understanding that some days you will fall short, other days you will overreach and still other days you will meet each other right in the middle.

Happy communicating, Happy reconnecting, and Happy New Year!

How to start an internet business

With over 2 billion people online, and growing by millions a day, the internet is the largest marketplace in the world. As more and more people get online for the first time many are looking for a way to start an online business or looking to make money online. There are some fundementals to starting an online business, we cover some of them below.

Starting an Internet Business does not have to cost you ten?s of thousands of dollars like a traditional brick and mortar business. Infact many businesses online are started for free until they can build the revenue needed to setup a more professional presense online. We will cover some of the basic things you should consider when setting up your Internet Business.

1.) Great Hosting ? A creative well designed website means nothing if it does not function properly, and if your hosting stinks, your visitor experience will stink. A web visitor who gets frustrated with your site and leaves, will not return. Duplicate this model enough times and your dreams of a successful internet business will be gone in no time.

2.) Needed product or service ? You can?t sell ice to an eskimo! You need to understand the market you are entering and make sure the product or service you are trying to sell is one that is needed or wanted by enough people that it can supply an income stream to build and maintain your business and meet the financial goals you set out to obtain when you started your online business.

3.) Functional nicely designed website ? Without a fully functional website you might as well throw in the towel. Your website has to function when your web visitor (customer) needs it to. Your ecommerce software, your links, your pages, everything needs to work in a way that supplies your visitor with the information they need, when they need it and allows them to purchase the products or services they want when they are ready to make the purchase.

4.) Great Customer Support ? This is perhaps the single most important aspect to running your Internet Business as without it you will surely fail. Customer Support is key. People spend money and when they need to reach out to you you need to be there for them. When a customer has a question or is not completely satisfied with their experience you need to provide a level of support and care that will make them a long time loyal customer knowing that they can count on you to do the right thing.

5.) Advertising and Marketing Know How ? If you can?t get found you can?t sell. With billions of potential customers online come the potential for billions of competitors! Knowing how to stand out from the crowd and profiting from online traffic is the key to your success.

And the most important key to running an Internet Business is?

BELIEVE you will Succeed

You must know that to be successful online you must believe in yourself, because many times no one else will believe in you, or in fact, will tell you that you should not even try in the first place! You need to be optimistic and stay motivated because if you believe you cant, then you won?t. You must Believe to Acheive! There will be many road blocks along the way, but press on, follow these rules, watch out for scams, stay motivated and you will reach your goals sooner than you think.

We have developed a system that uses very little electricity from your vehicle?s battery to cause water to turn into HHO gas. This gas is two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. This gas, also called Brown?s Gas, Oxyhydrogen, Hydroxy or Water-Fuel burns very smoothly and releases A LOT of energy. The end result of this process is water.

Works for big-rigs, trucks, motor-homes, even motorcycles.

We have simplified and made this technology even more inexpensive.

Good for carb/fuel injection, diesel, turbo-diesel, gasoline and petrol.

Works for new and old cars.

You get permission to duplicate the RunAutoWithWater Quickstart system for your own benefit.

Mechanics agree that current engines normally utilize only 20-25% of the power of the gasoline being used. By installing the very easy to build at home RunAutoWithWater system, oxy-hydrogen gas will be injected into the engine to increase the ability of your car engine to produce energy.

The fact is that the hydrogen in water is many times more potent and full of energy than gasoline is. By using electricity from your car?s engine, the hydrogen stays in the form of water up until the split second needed to add to the combustion chamber of your motor. The end result is an increased fuel efficiency of up to 70-80% as well as a cleaner engine and less smog in your exhaust.

The system is very easy to install and we give you step-by-step instructions.

The system can be quickly and easily connected to the vehicle?s battery and draws less than 1-2 amps. The system is protected by a fuse and can be connected or disconnected in less than 5-10 minutes.

Because of such a low power consumption of our design, the vehicle battery lasts just as long as when the system is not attached.

Our design using stainless steel rods produces more oxygen and hydrogen, consumes less electrical power, and is easier and simplier to build (compared to older designs that use plates or spiral cables). It also lasts longer, is easier to clean, and is safer because there is less deterioration of the components.

Fearful of ban, frenzied buyers swarm gun stores

The phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the massacre in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators.

Clerk Lance McCoy shows a variety of weapons including an AR-15 style semi-automatic at Kizer Guns and Ammo near Nacogdoches, Texas. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has jumped since the Dec. 14 school shooting in Newtown, Conn., that killed 20 children and six adults.

The phones at Red's Trading Post wouldn't stop ringing. Would-be customers from as far away as New York wanted to know if the Twin Falls, Idaho gun shop had firearms in stock. Others clamored to find out if their orders had been shipped.

Overwhelmed, gun store manager Ryan Horsley had to do what no employee would ever think of doing just days before Christmas: He disconnected the phone lines for three whole days.

"We had to shut everything off," says Horsley, whose family has owned Red's Trading Post, the state's oldest gun shop, since 1936. "We were swamped in the store and online."

The phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators. The shooting sparked calls for tighter gun control measures, especially for military-style assault weapons like the ones used in Newtown and in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting earlier this year. The prospect of a possible weapons ban has sent gun enthusiasts into a panic and sparked a frenzy of buying at stores and gun dealers nationwide.

2012 enters the record books. Were you paying attention? A news quiz.

Assault rifles are sold out across the country. Rounds of .223 bullets, like those used in the AR-15 type Bushmaster rifle used in Newtown, are scarce. Stores are struggling to restock their shelves. Gun and ammunition makers are telling retailers they will have to wait months to get more.

Store owners who have been in the business for years say they have never seen demand like this before.

When asked how much sales have increased in the past few weeks, Horsley just laughed.

"We haven't even had a chance to look at it," he says. Horsley spends his days calling manufacturers around the country trying to buy more items for the store. Mainly, they tell him he has to wait.

Franklin Armory, a firearm maker in Morgan Hill, Calif., is telling dealers that it will take six months to fulfill their orders. The company plans to hire more workers and buy more machines to catch up, says Franklin Armory's President Jay Jacobson.

The shortage is leaving many would-be gun owners empty handed.

William Kotis went to a gun show in Winston-Salem, N.C., last weekend hoping to buy a rifle for target shooting. Almost everything was sold out.

"Assault rifles were selling like crazy," says Kotis, who is president and CEO of Kotis Holdings, a real estate development company based in Greensboro. "People are stockpiling."

He left without buying anything.

Luke Orlando's parents were able to get him the 12-gauge shotgun he wanted for Christmas to bird hunt, but his uncle wasn't as lucky.

"At Christmas dinner, my uncle expressed outrage that after waiting six months to use his Christmas bonus to purchase an AR-15, they are sold out and back ordered over a year," says Orlando, 18, a student at the University of Texas.

Former President George H.W. Bush remains hospitalized

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush remains in intensive care in a Houston hospital recovering from a fever that arose after a long battle with bronchitis.

Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Saturday he would release a statement if there was anything to report, but wasn't sure there would be.

McGrath said Friday that the 88-year-old Bush's condition continued to improve since moving into intensive care at Methodist Hospital on Sunday. Later Friday, McGrath said that updates on the president would come on an "as-warranted" basis.

Bush was hospitalized Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough.

Bush, the 41st president, is the country's oldest living former president by a few months.

Florida Gator Sugar Bowl Memories: 2001 Florida 20-Miami 37

As the Gators prepare for the big Sugar Bowl showdown with Louisville on January 2nd, HailFloridaHail looks back at previous Gator Sugar Bowl match-ups. Today we take a look back to the 2001 game versus in-state rival the Miami Hurricanes.

Both teams came into the game featuring high powered offenses. The Gators had cocky freshman quarterback Rex Grossman, running back Earnest Graham, and receivers Reche Caldwell and Jabar Gaffney. The Hurricanes featured quarterback Ken Dorsey, running back Clinton Portis, and receivers Santana Moss and Reggie Wayne. Of course, both teams featured great defenses too led by All American Ken Dorsey for Miami and cornerback Lito Sheppard for the Gators.

For the 9-2 Gators this was just a chance to show they were still one of the elite teams in college football, but for the Hurricanes, who came in 10-1 it was an opportunity to make a case for a split national championship. The BCS had left them out of the title game, despite Miami?s being second in every major poll, which instead had a match-up of undefeated Oklahoma versus one loss Florida State. The hope for Miami was that with a big win against Florida in the Sugar Bowl and a Florida State upset might get the writers in the AP poll to vote them number one ahead of the Noles. The BCS of course would have to go to the winner of that game by default.

The first half showcased the offensive firepower and defensive prowess of both teams as there were big passing plays and big defensive hits. Both quarterbacks were under the gun from strong pass rushes often letting passes go with players in their face or as they were being hit. By halftime the teams had combined for 497 yards and 52 pass attempts but despite all the offense the score was still only 13-10 in favor of the Hurricanes.

The teams, who moved the ball effectively in the first half between the twenty yard lines but had a hard time cracking the goal line, mostly traded field goals. The Gators, however, opened the scoring on their second possession with Grossman driving them to a touchdown pass to Kirk Wells and a 7-0 lead.

The Hurricanes would respond with a short drive which resulted in a field goal and then a longer drive which culminated in a Ken Dorsey touchdown pass to tight end Jeremy Shockey and the Canes led 10-7. After another Miami field goal, the Gators would put one on the board with a Jeff Chandler 51 yard kick for a 13-10 Miami lead late in the second quarter.

The Gators running their two minute offense got themselves into field goal range seemingly looking to tie the score going into halftime. However, Spurrier, who always seemed to show distaste for field goals, chose to go for broke with 13 seconds left in the half taking a shot downfield which was intercepted leaving the Gators in a 13-10 halftime deficit.

The Hurricanes would take control in the second half. After the Gators turned a Ken Dorsey interception into a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half putting the Gators ahead 17-13, Dorsey would lead them on an 80 yard touchdown drive to retake the lead. After another Dorsey touchdown pass and a short touchdown run, the Canes put the game out of reach with the tough Hurricane defense shuting down any Gator comeback attempts to leave with a 37-20 victory over the Gators.

Wall Street heads for longest losing streak in three months

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Friday, putting the S&P 500 on track for a fifth straight decline, as President Barack Obama and top congressional leaders were set to make a last-ditch attempt to steer the country away from severe fiscal austerity next year.

Obama and lawmakers from both political parties will meet at the White House on Friday afternoon for talks in an effort to agree on a solution before a New Year's deadline to keep large tax hikes and spending cuts from taking effect. Economists say that combination of automatic higher taxes and lower government spending - known as the "fiscal cliff" - could push the U.S. economy into a recession.

Trading was volatile and stocks rebounded from their session lows after unconfirmed reports that President Obama was about to offer a new plan to Republicans.

But investors' pessimism about achieving anything more than a stop-gap deal by the deadline was reflected in the benchmark S&P 500's drop of 1.3 percent so far this week. The broad index was on pace for its worst weekly performance since mid-November.

A five-day decline would be the S&P 500's longest losing streak in three months.

"There's a pretty good chance that we won't have something in hand by year-end," said Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at UBS, in New York. "It should be pretty obvious that that is now the majority case."

Golub, however, said investors were still counting on a deal that would avoid most of the tax hikes and spending cuts next year even if it does come after the deadline.

"It is widely believed that we're going to get a deal," he said. "We are not going to go over the cliff to the extent that we have a huge economic contraction."

With time running short, members of Congress may attempt to pass a retroactive fix to neutralize tax increases and spending cuts soon after the automatic fiscal policies come into effect on January 1.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 65.65 points, or 0.50 percent, to 13,030.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 6.03 points, or 0.43 percent, to 1,412.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> slipped 7.29 points, or 0.24 percent, to 2,978.62.

"It doesn't matter which side wins, but at this point, nobody wants to play a game where there aren't rules," said Joe Costigan, director of equity research at Bryn Mawr Trust, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

"So everybody is talking about what the prospects are for changes in the rules. But at the end of the day, nothing is happening."

Highlighting Wall Street's sensitivity to developments in Washington, stocks tumbled slightly more than 1 percent on Thursday after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned that a deal was unlikely before the deadline. But late in the day, the three major U.S. stock indexes rebounded and ended down just 0.1 percent after the U.S. House of Representatives said it would hold an unusual Sunday session to work on a fiscal solution.

With many investors away for the holiday-shortened week, volume is expected to remain light and that could exacerbate the stock market's swings.

Positive economic data failed to alter the market's downtrend.

The National Association of Realtors said contracts to buy previously owned U.S. homes rose in November to their highest level in 2-1/2 years, while a report from the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago showed business activity in the U.S. Midwest expanded in December.

Barnes & Noble Inc shares rose 6.2 percent to $15.24 after the top U.S. bookstore chain said British publisher Pearson Plc had agreed to make a strategic investment in its Nook Media subsidiary. But Barnes & Noble also said its Nook business will not meet its previous projection for fiscal year 2013.

Shares of magicJack VocalTec Ltd jumped 8.5 percent to $17.67 after the company, which provides VoIP or voice over Internet protocol services, forecast more than $39 million in GAAP revenue and over 70 cents per share in operating income for the fourth quarter. The company also said it has appointed Gerald Vento as president and CEO, effective January 1.

The U.S.-listed shares of Canadian drugmaker Aeterna Zentaris Inc surged 16.1 percent to $2.52 after the company said it had reached an agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on a special protocol assessment by the FDA for a Phase 3 registration trial in endometrial cancer with AEZS-108 treatment.

Celebrity bad science: Dried placenta pills and oxygen shots

LONDON | Fri Dec 28, 2012 4:10am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - Pop guru Simon Cowell carries pocket-sized inhalable oxygen shots, America's "Mad Men" actress January Jones favors dried placenta pills, and British soap star Patsy Palmer rubs coffee granules into her skin.

Celebrities rarely shy away from public peddling of dubious ideas about health and science, and 2012 was no exception.

In its annual list of the year's worst abuses against science, the Sense About Science (SAS) campaign also named former U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney for spreading misinformation about windows on planes, and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps for false justifications for peeing in the pool.

To help set the record straight, SAS, a charity dedicated to helping people make sense of science and evidence, invited qualified scientists to respond to some of the wilder pseudo-scientific claims put about by the rich and famous.

It suggested Romney, who wondered aloud in September why aircraft crews don't just open the windows when there's a fire on board, should listen to aeronautical engineer Jakob Whitfield:

"Unfortunately, Mitt, opening a window at height wouldn't do much good," the scientist said. "In fact, if you could open a window whilst in flight, the air would rush out...because air moves from the high pressure cabin to the lower pressure outside, probably causing further injury and damage."

January Jones's dried placenta pills, which the actress admitted in March she consumed after giving birth, win no favor with Catherine Collins, principal dietician at St George's Hospital in London.

"Nutritionally, there's nothing to be gained from eating your placenta - raw, cooked, or dried," Collins said. "Apart from iron, which can be easily found in other dietary choices or supplements, your placenta will provide toxins and other unsavory substances it had successfully prevented from reaching your baby in utero."

Gary Moss, a pharmaceutical scientist, patiently points out to Palmer that while caffeine may have an effect on cellulite, rubbing coffee granules into the skin is unlikely to work, since the caffeine can't escape the granules to penetrate the skin.

Phelps's claim that it's fine to pee in the pool because "chlorine kills it" is put straight by biochemist Stuart Jones, who reminds him that "urine is essentially sterile so there isn't actually anything to kill in the first place".

And for Cowell, Kay Mitchell a scientist at the Centre for Altitude Space and Extreme Environment Medicine warns that very high levels of oxygen can in fact be toxic - particularly in the lungs, where oxygen levels are highest.

"Celebrity comments travel far and fast, so it's important that they talk sense," said Sense About Science's managing director Tracey Brown. "The implausible and frankly dangerous claims about how to avoid cancer, improve skin or lose weight are becoming ever more ridiculous. And unfortunately they have a much higher profile than the research and evidence."

To encourage more vigilance among celebrity pseudo-scientists in the future, SAS provided a checklist of "misleading science claims" it suggests should be avoided:

* "Immune boosting" - you can't and you don't need to

* "Detox" - your liver does this

* "Superfood" - there is no such thing, just foods that are high in some nutrients

* "Oxygenating" - your lungs do this

* "Cleansing" - you shouldn't be trying to cleanse anything other than your skin or hair.

5 Tips to Writing Job-Winning Cover Letters | Design Resumes

The cover letter remains a stumbling point for many job seekers. As a professional resume writer, I include cover letters in all the levels of my resume options because I believe a cover letter is essential in almost every job search.

When do you need a cover letter?

An easier question to answer is when don?t you need a cover letter? If you are dropping a resume off to the recipient or emailing it directly to the decision-maker, you might be able to drop the formal cover letter. However, in the case of emailing it to the decision-maker, you should still have a well-written note to the recipient about why you are qualified for the position.

What does the cover letter do for you?

If you consider the resume as a marketing document where the product is you, then you should consider the cover letter as the specific marketing notice that explains why you and your talents are exactly what the company needs in the position.

What do I need to know to write the best cover letter?

1. You need to know the industry and the company. You have to have done the research so that first, you understand the industry you are targeting and then the specific company. You need to know the products of the company inside and out so that you can speak to their needs in the cover letter.

2. If you mimic what the job description is looking for early in the cover letter, the reader or hiring manager will understand why you are applying for a specific job. Look at this example, transitioning from Hospitality to Financial Planning. She had 18 offers and is in her new role.

Throughout my career in the hospitality industry, I have built a reputation for confidentiality and discretion while working with elite guests. This skill set coupled with a profitability-conscious focus and a background in exceptional people management will make me an excellent candidate for an Associate Financial Advisor.

3. You will do better if you find specific areas in the job description that you are a direct match to and answer the question: ?why should I hire you?? in several points of the cover letter. Here is a quote from an internal candidate?s cover letter, and yes, even internal candidates should have a cover letter if requested or to reinforce their qualifications. This client is now the Executive Director of her non-profit organization.

If I am chosen for the role of Executive Director, I believe I can help move the organization forward with the same innovative momentum you and Nancy have established in recent history. I deeply understand and appreciate the culture of the organization from the staff members, our client families, potential donors and, of course the club members.

4. Give specific examples of what you bring to the table. This bullet point was in the cover letter example for a client that now has landed a key position in a national non-profit organization.

Secured Angel Investor for $16 million capital campaign, start-up costs, and three years of ongoing operating support.

5. Ask for the job in the cover letter. Too many candidates leave off the ask. Both of these closes ask for the interview.

Overall, I believe that I bring all the many attributes you are seeking in the position of Executive Director and I would be thrilled to discuss my qualifications and our bright future with you and the selection committee in a personal interview soon.

I would enjoy the opportunity to discuss how I could help coordinate your annual fundraising programs and events. Please contact me to schedule an appointment at a mutually convenient time.

If you are struggling to write your resume and the cover letter that will bring you to the next level in your career, perhaps it is time to work with an expert.

Choosing a Car Logbook Loan as quick finance option | Hostel Jelica

Posted on 28 December 2012

With the recession continuing to see living costs increase, unemployment rising and the economy still struggling to recover, more people are needing to look at finance options. If you urgently need some money and you doubt you can raise a loan from traditional lenders as you may have a poor credit history and are weary of taking out a payday loan due to the exceptionally high annual interest rates then a car logbook loan could be the ideal solution. One of the easiest and quickest methods of obtaining a loan is with a logbook loan secured against your car. If you own a car, you can use it as collateral to get your hands on an amount of cash dependent on the vehicle?s value. However, if you default on your loan repayments, the ownership of the car will transfer to the lender. There is obviously this risk, but it can be worthwhile if you consider the information below.

Car logbook loans are an excellent opportunity for people with a poor credit score or who need urgent cash. So, if you are in this position, a car logbook loan could be ideal for you. The first and most important criteria are that you must own the car that is being offered as collateral, meaning that the logbook or registration document must be in your name. Someone else?s vehicle cannot be used to raise a loan for you.

Your car must be completely free from finance and accompanied by an up to date logbook in order to be eligible for a car logbook loan. You will have more chance of raising the money you need if your car is less than ten years old because the value will decrease every year. An old car will be worth much less and probably will not be sufficient for the amount of money you need. If your car is recently free of finance, it is wise to apply for and pay off the loan as soon as you can, as cars over ten years old are usually not considered for a car logbook loan.

In addition, approval for a car logbook loan will depend on you proving that your vehicle is taxed and insured at the time of the application. Remember that you will still need to pay your tax and insurance and keep your driving licence for the duration of the loan. It is recommended that you endeavour to repay the loan as soon as possible in order to enjoy the cash and not risk your car being repossessed. Be certain that you can repay the loan plus interest over the period agreed. If you decide to apply for a car logbook loan, taking all these things into consideration, just find a reputable company who offers this service and apply. It is actually very easy. As Logbook loans are secured against your car, they have a very quick approval rate and are a much more responsible option than payday loans.
