New Restaurant is a Family Affair - Cranston, RI Patch

At Gabriel's Italian Restaurant on Phenix Avenue, the focus is on family.

The food will appeal to families who love Italian classics. It's priced affordably, so families can dine out without breaking the bank.

But most of all, it's a family business, run by three generations of the Ferri family.

Gabriel Ferri, who recently ran a restaurant at Foxwoods Casino and Resort, will be in the kitchen, cooking up classic Italian dishes from his mother's recipe box.?

His son, Gabriel Jr., will be behind the bar, serving beer, wine and liquor to patrons looking for a drink to accompany their food ? or to unwind with an appetizer.

His father, also named Gabriel, will be on hand along with the rest of the family ? his wife Cheriann and his mother, too.

"I'm keeping my family employed," Ferri joked. "We're all looking forward to working hard."

The restaurant opens today at 39 Phenix Avenue, next to the popular 39 West restaurant.

The menu covers all the basics ? calamari, caprese, or bruchetta to start. Soups, salads, a full lunch menu with sandwiches and pasta dishes.?

And then there's the dinner entrees: chicken marsala, parmigiana, veal Francaise, baked cod, and more. Then on Fridays you can order specials a-la-cart such as fish and chips, linguine and clam sauce, a clam roll and shrimp scampi.

The menu is simple and straightforward but Ferri promises that the food won't disappoint. The emphasis isn't on dramatics or being adventurous so much as doing what people want and doing it right.

The recipes are based on his mother's recipes. Her recipe collection is "the Bible of recipes," Ferri said.

"She could walk into an empty room and make a delicious meal," Ferri said. "Hopefully people enjoy it."

This is the third restaurant the Ferri family will have operated ? the first two were in Warwick. The elder Ferris are no strangers to the business, either, having managed or run restaurants and a bed and breakfast in the past.

"It's just in the blood," Ferri said.

It means a lot to Ferri, a Cranston resident, to be back at the helm of his own business once again. Working for Foxwoods gave him a steady paycheck but he knew it was time to run his own place again. The casino has seen a slowdown in recent years and people have been worried about layoffs. The commute was also tough ? there were times that Ferri had to sleep at the casino during snowstorms just to be there the following morning if the roads weren't plowed.

Now, Ferri lives around the corner. And he won't be away from his family for hours every day. Now he can just poke his head out of the kitchen. Dad, Junior, his wife, mom ? they're just around the corner.
